Drinking More Water Can Help Your Energy Levels

We all need energy every single day just to function in life; it takes energy to get out of bed in the morning, to get ready and go to school or work. It takes energy to walk, run, play, work-out, and for sexual activities, to name just a few.

Pretty much anything you do involves energy, or is impacted by how much energy you have.

One cause of low energy levels in your body can be dehydration.

What Is Dehydration?

Dehydration is one of the biggest causes of fatigue, and one of the least recognized.

Having enough water and fluids in your body is important at all time for the body to function correctly. Not having enough water and fluids in your body can lead to dehydration.

While dehydration is more common in infants and the elderly, it is something we can all suffer form if we don't pay proper attention to our health and our bodies.

What Causes Dehydration?

Dehydration is caused when you are not taking in enough fluids to meet your body's needs, and to replenish the fluids you are losing.

You lose fluids when you sweat, during hot weather, exercise, and even during a fever, and through vomiting and diarrhea. During these situations it's important to increase your fluid intake accordingly.

How To Avoid Dehydration

Drink plenty of fluids regularly. Don't wait to become overly thirsty before drinking, and instead take small regular drinks throughout the day.

Drink more if the weather is hot, during exercise, and at the first signs of vomiting or diarrhea.

So, How Does It Affect My Energy Levels?

While energy depletion during physical activity and dehydration typically go hand-in-hand, what about dehydration when you aren't being overtly physically active?

Even mild dehydration causes fatigue because as you dehydrate your blood thickens and your body has to work harder in order to pump the blood around, which not only requires energy to do, but reduces the blood's ability to transport other nutrients around the body.

Tip Of The Day

Often when our body needs water we misinterpret it for a need for food and grab a snack. Not only does this not satisfy the need for water, but it adds additional calories our body didn't need... and we all know where they end up?

Try to ensure you are drinking sufficient water throughout the day, and when you do get the urge to snack or eat outside of regular meal times, try drinking a glass of water first and see how often that craving to eat goes away!

Bare Truths - NSAIDs Use For Dog Arthritis May Lead to Dog Diarrhea

As your dog grows older, you will have to give him a more specialized care and attention just like what we do with old people. If you have an old dog in the family, then it is essential that you learn the proper and the basic elements of caring of senior dogs. Your dog is expected to reach the age of 15 if he is properly cared for and critical health issues are immediately acted upon.

It would serve you and your dog well if you develop the eye at identifying the health issues which are critical especially for a senior dog. Typical health issues confronting old dogs usually involve dog arthritis. It is important for you to recognize the onset of this health issue and appropriate intervention must be done to avoid further deterioration of your dog's health and prevent complications.

The most popular prescription drug used to manage the pain caused by arthritis in animals is the NSAIDs or the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. What is causing a lot concern for those who are aware of the side effects of this drug types is the unregulated use of NSAIDs to manage pain especially in senior dogs. Dog health experts stress the importance of blood work up before prescribing NSAIDs to treat canine arthritis.

Safety Profile of NSAIDs

The efficacy of NSAIDs to treat arthritis is highly recognized, however, the documented side effects require us to take a careful look at the continued use of the drugs to manage the pain attributed to canine arthritis. Some quarters claim that the drug reactions far outweigh whatever benefits it provides.

Some owners of dogs prescribed with NSAIDs agree that the quality of life of their old dogs have immensely improved and even extended the lives of their senior dogs. On the other hand, some owners claim that NSAIDs actually aggravated the medical condition of their dogs and led to early mortality caused by liver failure attributed to the side effects of NSAIDs. The failure of some veterinarians to recognize the drug's side effects of NSAIDs also contributed to the problem. Owners of senior dogs must be able to determine the signs of reaction in the use of NSAIDs in order to prevent further aggravation of the problem. You should check for possible onset of vomiting, diarrhea and generalized lethargy in our senior dogs. Dogs can also manifest distinct behavioral changes and constipation which is an indication of toxic reaction to the use of NSAIDs.

Before any prescription of NSAIDs, request for a thorough blood work up and examination of liver enzymes. Dog owners should also remember that NSAIDs is not recommended for dogs with history of bleeding disorders and should not be administered to dogs with confirmed liver dysfunction. It is also important not to use NSAIDs in tandem with other anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin, prednisolone or prednisone.

In managing the pain experienced by senior dogs as a result of arthritis, you must explore other alternative treatment intervention beyond the use of NSAIDs. There are other alternative drugs known to deliver good results without the attendant adverse reactions normally associated to the use of NSAIDs.

Chronic Diarrhoea

Question:

My eight-year-old son has had persistent diarrhoea for the past 16 months and soils himself day and night. He has been prescribed lactulose and Senokot solutions and his consultant recently upped the dosage considerably. After a few days, he began to pass extremely large soft motions (he never got to the lavatory in time). He is a fussy eater but what he does eat is relatively OK - cereal, fruit, bread -although he will only eat one vegetable. He also has plenty of fruit juice, milk and sometimes water. It has been suggested that his diarrhoea was triggered by the death of a grandparent. Do you think it was right to increase his medication?

Answer:

From what you say, it sounds as if the wrong medicines have been given to your son - unless there is something else going on that you are not aware of. Both Lactulose and Senokot are laxatives, meaning that they are drugs used to treat constipation and not Diarrhoea. I am not surprised that the poor child is soiling his clothes. Under such conditions, increasing the doses of these medicines is absolutely the wrong thing to do. My advice is that you should stop these medicines immediately.

Chronic diarrhoea will cause malabsorption of nutrients. The food matter does not stay long enough in the intestines to be properly digested. In a child, constant diarrhoea can be a major problem because it prevents the absorption of proteins, vitamins and minerals, which the child needs to grow. The action of the laxatives is likely to exacerbate this. For instance, calcium, magnesium and other minerals are absorbed in the colon, which is where the laxatives and purgatives are most active.

Laxatives contain mainly fibres (eg, senna, spinach, psyllium husks) or seeds (figs) which are indigestible and prevent the binding of stools. Purgatives, which are based on castor oil, chillis, magnesium salts, etc, are bowel irritants and cause excess fluid discharge from the gut walls, also causing the stools to be unnaturally soft and runny. Additionally, food poisoning, bacterial dysentery and intolerance to foods cause a similar reaction. The body tries to expel the pathogens (agents which cause disease) by discharging large quantities of fluid and mucus. This results in diarrhoea.

It is possible that stress due to the death of a loved relative could have triggered the initial condition, but you may never know. In chronic diarrhoea, my approach is to eliminate the physical causes, slow the bowel movement, help in stool binding and improve absorption of nutrients.

Here are my suggestions:

* Give your child a non-fibre diet to slow down the movement of the intestines and help stool formation. Restrict food to: potatoes, carrots, turnips, swede mashed with olive oil or a little butter, mushy peas, pasta with olive oil, minced red meat, chicken or turkey with garlic, ginger and salt, well cooked rice, oatmeal porridge, hard or soft boiled eggs, cottage cheese, live natural yoghurt kiwi fruit, peeled apples and plums, honey. Avoid green vegetables, roughage of any kind, spices and anything else that irritates the bowels.

* After two months, when the exclusion diet above has settled the bowels and the stools are better formed, gradually add other fruit such as bananas, pears and nectarines. and raw vegetables such as broccoli, courgettes, cabbage, asparagus and cauliflower. Always remove stalks as these contain the most roughage.

* Give him Multivitamins: eight drops daily for two months.

* Make sure he drinks plenty of still water - at least six glasses daily.

* Introduce exercise such as swimming, walking and ball games. The more exercise, the better the absorption of food because the body needs the nutrients.

* Pomegranate juice is good for binding stools. If you can find the juice, give him a quarter of a cupful twice daily for 15 days. Or buy a fresh pomegranate and boil a quarter of the peel in four cups of water for 15 minutes. Let it cool for an hour. One cup should be drunk twice daily for ten days.

* Massage his abdomen gently, clockwise, with a little sweet almond or sesame oil for two minutes at bedtime, for two weeks.

* If the diarrhoea persists for more than a month despite taking the above measures, you must take your child to see a different physician to investigate the causes. Talk to your GP about finding someone who is sympathetic to complementary medicine.

Do You Need Diarrhea Treatment?

It's often hard for people to talk about trouble they might be having with their digestive system, especially when it involves a socially embarrassing condition like diarrhea. Most people are surprised to learn that diarrhea is one of the most common medical conditions affecting any age group, second only to the common cold. Most people experience diarrhea only temporarily, and it passes on its own without any significant treatment. Others will find they experience diarrhea on an ongoing basis, and these people often have to seek chronic diarrhea treatment.

Who Needs Diarrhea Treatment?

As mentioned previously, there are some cases of diarrhea that are little more than signs of indigestion, while other cases are quite serious and might be the symptom of a more significant health problem that needs chronic diarrhea treatment. If you've been experiencing diarrhea continuously for more than twenty-four hours, it's probably a good idea to seek treatment for diarrhea from your doctor. They can perform the tests that are necessary to determine the causes of your condition. It's especially important that you don't wait longer for diarrhea treatment, because it could result in dehydration or even death if you allow it to continue for too long.

Symptoms That Indicate the Need for Diarrhea Treatment

Anytime you're experiencing abnormal activity in your bowels it's important to pay attention to the symptoms so that you can get treatment for diarrhea if the need arises. Most people are familiar with the symptoms of diarrhea that indicate treatment for diarrhea might be necessary, but just as a reminder, be sure to watch for:

• Watery, liquid stools of any color. Red and black stools both indicate a serious medical problem and should be cause for seeking emergency treatment right away.
• Moderate to intense abdominal pain. This can occur both before and after bouts of diarrhea. If the pain is so severe that you can't walk or stand up, seek diarrhea treatment immediately.
• Dehydration. This is a common side effect of diarrhea because the body expels so much fluid with the waste.

Finding Your Own Diarrhea Treatment Plan

If you're just experiencing an out of the ordinary bout of diarrhea, it's fairly simple to take care of the problem with your own treatment for diarrhea. First, you'll want to drink a lot of water because it's easy to completely deplete your body of liquids with just a moderate case of diarrhea. If a child is suffering, this treatment plan is even more important. Avoid drinking milk as this can make the diarrhea worse. Another common treatment is to follow the BRAT diet, which stands for bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast.

Using Probiotics as a Diarrhea Treatment Plan

Some people live with more than just the occasional bout of diarrhea, and these are the individuals in need of a chronic diarrhea treatment plan. Typically, diarrhea that is reoccurring, or lasts for more than a few days but is not caused by illness is the result of an imbalance of bad bacteria in the digestive system. Probiotics can help restore normal function and replenish the good bacteria into your digestive system.

A Healthy Colon Cleanse - Diarrhea an Expected Symptom?

With the growing global demand for more natural health products many people are becoming aware of the substantial benefits of a healthy colon cleanse. A concern for some is will they experience diarrhea? With a safe healthy colon cleanse diarrhea should not be a symptom.

Clinical diarrhea is defined as frequent and watery bowel movements, often leaving the sufferer weak, drained and dehydrated and caused by temporary problems including,

- A Virus

- Infection

- Intestinal disease such as IBS, Celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease

- Lactose intolerance

- Prescription drugs, reactions to medications such as blood pressure regulators and antibiotics

- Parasites

- Bacterial infections from contaminated food or water

If using Osmotic laxatives as a colon cleanse, diarrhea is an expected result. Their purpose is to leech water from the body and into the colon converting compacted waste into diarrhea. Commonly causing other distresses to the body including build up of gas, severe dehydration and electrolyte imbalance as well as the diarrhea.

Many herbal cleanses use ingredients such as Senna and Cascara sagrada. If using this type of colon cleanse, diarrhea can be an unwelcome side effect. Other herbal cleanses can have the opposite effect, causing hard to pass dry and bulky stool and in severe cases can actually cause total obstruction due to the bulking effect of the fibre trying to pass through an already restricted colon.

With a preferred oxygen based natural healthy colon cleanse, diarrhea is not a symptom. An oxygen based colon cleanse works by sustained time released oxygen (over 18 hours in proven effective oxygen cleansers). Providing a complete cleaning of the whole digestive tract as well as providing oxygen therapy to the blood, liver, kidneys and other organs as it is transported in safe ozonated magnesium oxide. Providing the added benefit of assisting in the elimination of a large number of parasites and anaerobic bacteria that cannot survive in an oxygenated environment.

The purpose of an oxygen colon cleanser is to oxidise compacted stuck stool. In other words it turns solids into a liquid or gas. it is highly recommended to start with small doses (which is usually enough for most people) and slowly build up until 3-5 bowel movements are achieved in a day, that way excessive, disruptive or extremely urgent bathroom visits are avoided, unlike a case of diarrhea.

Not all Oxygen based colon cleansers are the same however, some are not effective due to the use of improper and inferior ingredients. As a result of using these products for a colon cleanse, diarrhea, dehydration and other symptoms are possible.

Chocolate And Your Dog's Health - What You Should Know

Chocolate. Who can resist it?

Your dogs health depends on it! (resisting, that is). We humans get to indulge because most of us know when to stop. But your dog won't quit after just a few. Give her a chance and she'll down the whole box of Godivas in one gulp. So on Valentine's Day, you're actually being kind to your best buddy if you eat all the chocolates yourself!

**Why is chocolate harmful to a dogs health?**

Chocolate, as you know, is made with cocoa beans. And cocoa beans contain methylxanthine alkaloids in the form of theobromine and caffeine, which are toxic to dogs. Chocolate can also contain high amounts of fat which can put your dogs health in jeopardy as well.

**How Much is Too Much?**

Though it's certain that dogs and chocolate don't mix, different dogs react differently to the methylxanthines. And reactions can vary according to the age, size and overall health of the dog. The smaller the dog the smaller the dose needed to produce an effect.
And of course, if your dog's health is already weakened by other medical conditions, he's more susceptible. The same holds for older dogs..
Theobromine is present in differing amounts in different kinds of chocolate:

繚 White chocolate 1mg/oz

繚 Hot chocolate 12 mg /oz

繚 Milk chocolate 44-66 mg/oz

繚 Semi-sweet chocolate 260 mg/oz

繚 Dark chocolate 450 mg/oz (wow!)

繚 Baking/bitter chocolate or cocoa powder varies as much as 150-600 mg/oz.

**How much chocolate can a dog eat and survive?**

That depends in part on her weight.

Under 200 mg theobromine per kg body weight (91mg per lb) has not been observed to be fatal. A potentially lethal dose in a 16 pound. dog is only one pound of milk chocolate. Only two ounces of baking chocolate can cause serious problems in a 10-pound dog. People stop eating chocolate before getting to toxic levels, but dogs don't!

**What are the warning signs of a problem?**

Any dog who's eaten chocolate should be watched closely for symptoms, particularly smaller dogs, "seniors", and dogs with health problems. Symptoms may range from from vomiting and diarrhea to panting, excessive thirst and urination, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures and even death in severe cases.

While white chocolate may not be as likely to cause a methylxanthine poisoning, the high fat content of lighter chocolates could still lead to vomiting and diarrhea, and possibly the development of life-threatening pancreatitis. Too much fatty food will also affect a dogs health in the same way it does ours, by packing on the pounds!

**What can be done once chocolate is ingested?**

Make note of the type of chocolate ingested and how much was eaten, if possible.

Theobromine will stay in the bloodstream between 14 and 20 hours. Within two hours of ingestion, try inducing vomiting unless your dog is over stimulated, comatose, or has lost the gag reflex.

If your dog has eaten a considerable amount of chocolate, or displays any of the above symptoms, take her to the vet right away. If her symptoms are minor, make her eat activated charcoal. The unabsorbed theobromine binds to it and be passed out of the system. (In a pinch, burnt - as in thoroughly blackened - toast will do.)

**Are there any other products I should worry about?**

Yes -- Cocoa Mulch!!

No, it's not chocolate, but the two products have something in common. They're both derived from the cocoa bean, and they're both hazardous to your dogs health.

Cocoa bean shells are a by-product of chocolate production and are popular as mulch for landscaping. Homeowners like the attractive color and scent, and the fact that the mulch breaks down into an organic fertilizer.

Some dogs are attracted to cocoa mulch, and will eat it in varying quantities. The coca bean shells can contain from 0.2% to 3% theobromine (the toxin ) as compared to 1-4% in unprocessed beans.

Eating cocoa mulch has four possible outcomes. The most common is vomiting, in 50% of cases. Next most common, in 33% of cases, is tremors (shaking). And 17% end up with tachycardia (rapid heart rate), hyperactivity or diarrhea. The fourth outcome is no effect on the dogs health at all, and this is the result in 33% of cases.

Although only 16 cases were reported in approximately one year (the duration of the study), reports are on the increase. California accounts for about 2/3 of cases reported so far. Fortunately, there have been no reported fatalities, and getting your friend to the vet promptly will assure a happy outcome.

**What's the Bottom Line?**

Thanks to a more educated public, fewer fatalities from foods like chocolate are being reported these days.

Still, it pays to keep up with what's currently known about various foods and their effects on a dogs health and well being. Grapes and cocoa mulch, for example, were discovered only recently to have harmful effects.

If your dogs health is important to you (and I'm betting it is!), then keep him away from the chocolates on Valentine's Day and other holidays as well. And watch out year round for products made from the cocoa bean.

In an emergency, call your vet or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435.

Acne Medicine is Not As Effective As Changing Your Diet For Healing Acne

Acne medicines only treat the symptoms of acne. They do not remove the cause of acne. Acne is caused from toxins being eliminated through your skin. Some acne medicine can have very harsh side effects.

Are you willing to risk damaging your skin with these sometimes dangerous drugs?

The good news is that you can cure your acne by changing your diet like I have, without using any type of acne medicine at all. Years ago I tried using different types of acne medicines to try and fix my skin, but they didn't work.

At the time I believed it when I read that eating an unhealthy diet does not cause acne. I now know that eating foods that are not compatible with your genetics definitely causes acne. When you are on the proper non-allergenic diet, you will not need to buy any more expensive acne medicine.

Acne medicine will not change your genetics. Not all people are the same. Some people might digest certain foods well without causing acne. Other people might be slightly allergic to that same food, and it can cause them to break out with acne. Remember: people have different genetics and come from different parts of the world.

Trains planes and automobiles have mixed up the food supply of the world and made it possible for people to have almost any food from any part of the world available to them.

Just because you can eat a food without it instantly killing you, doesn't mean that it is the best food for you with your unique genetics. Every animal on the planet has its own species-specific diet.

If you want to fix your skin without using acne medicine, than you will have to stop eating the foods that are causing your acne in the first place. Also certain combinations of foods can react with each other and form substances that your body will react negatively to.

Remember back in high school in chemistry class? When we would mix a bunch of chemicals together? Sometimes they would have a dramatic chemical reaction, and turn into a totally different substance. Have you seen the Mentos and Diet Coke experiments on Youtube, where the combination of the two makes an explosive reaction and sprays soda way up into the air? If you haven't already, you should see it. Just Google it.

What do you think happens if you eat Mentos and Diet Coke at the same time? If you have gas pains, then you are probably eating the wrong combinations of foods at the same meal.

There are many other foods and food additives that people eat on a regular basis that are turning into toxic chemicals when mixed together, that the body then has to get rid of. If your body has to, it will just send the toxins strait through your skin for rapid elimination, and taking acne medicine is not going to stop the toxins from being eaten in the first place.

Acne medicines might seem to work sometimes because some of them will make your skin tougher, which in turn makes the skin less permeable, which makes it harder for the toxins to be eliminated through the skin.

But this is not the healthy way to get rid of acne symptoms. It can actually be worse for your health in the long run because it makes it harder for your body to get rid of these toxins, which can lead to a toxic overload in the body.

So, you might want to think twice before deciding to try and cure your acne with acne medicines, because they can actually make your acne worse in the long run. If you really want to cure your acne the healthy way, you must change your diet.

There is no way around it. However, there are many other benefits to going on a healthy diet other than just curing acne, so look at it as a win-win.

Many diseases are caused from not being on the proper diet. If you get on the proper diet now, you will not have to worry as much about developing a major health problem in the future.

Also, your taste-buds will adapt, and healthy foods will actually start to taste good. I know that junk food, and the typical American diet of fast food, artificial chemical flavorings, junk food, candy, and deserts taste good, but it just isn't worth all of the diseases that it causes.

Cat Diarrhea and Cat Cryptosporidium

Cat diarrhea, or gastroenteritis, is an all too common of a problem in our four legged friends and although many cases are simply an upset intestinal tract, a cryptosporidium infection could be the cause.

A nasty parasite, cryptosporidium is a single celled organism that causes diarrhea by reproducing within the intestinal cells. This eventually kills the intestinal cell and as the number of cryptosporidium increase, the number of intestinal cells killed increases as well, resulting in sometimes severe bloody diarrhea.

Cryptosporidium is based in contaminated water and is in the same family as giardia. Symptoms of cryptosporidium infection include mild to severe watery diarrhea with or without blood, poor appetite, weight loss, abdominal cramping, and lethargy.

The most common diagnosis is a fecal exam but the cryptosporidium oocysts are so small, they are difficult to detect under normal testing and the magnification of microscopes in the average vet clinic. Instead of the usual 'in house' fecal exam, samples should be carefully sent to the lab for special staining and examination. Blood work to detect serum antibodies can often detect exposure to the infection and in rare cases, an intestinal biopsy may be necessary to confirm the presence of the parasite.

Treatment of Cryptosporidium

How severe the disease becomes is dependent on the overall health and immune function of the patient. Some infected individuals will not show any clinical signs of the cryptosporidium infection and are considered carriers. Eventually, the healthy immune system will kill the parasite and you may not have been aware your pet was ever sick.

For young kittens, older cats and cats suffering from a suppressed immune system, the severity of the condition can become life threatening and it is strongly recommended to hospitalize your pet. Dehydration from the diarrhea is as dangerous as the disease and IV fluids may be necessary to balance fluid levels and replace electrolytes.

There are antibiotics that slow down the reproduction of cryptosporidium protozoa, however, the only 'cure' is for the animal's immune system to fight off the disease. In healthy, immunocompetent cats, the disease is self-limiting and a full recovery is possible without medication. Some veterinarians prescribe antibiotics to prevent secondary infections although this practice is controversial as the medication kills the healthy bacteria and intestinal flora, leaving the body less capable of fighting off the parasite.

Life Cycle of Cryptosporidium and How Cats become Infected with Cryptosporidium

Like most parasites, cryptosporidium has a life cycle that involves multiple stages. The non-infectious oocysts are sloughed off in the intestinal tract and then eliminated in the feces. Once the environmental conditions are right, the non-infectious oocysts mature and become infectious (sporulated oocysts). Other cats, dogs, humans, livestock, or rats then accidentally swallow the infectious oocysts and another infection develops. Outdoor cats are more likely to be exposed to infected feces then indoor cats.

The oocysts contain sporozites and sporocysts and once in the intestinal tract, the 'zoites' attack and invade the intestinal cells. These develop into schizonts that release more zoites, then compromising more intestinal cells. These zoites then form gametocytes. The male gametocyte release gametes that fuse with the female gametocytes to form oocysts and the cycle continues.

Cryptosporidium Infection in Humans

Cryptosporidium is easily transferred to humans and, like cats, the immune system normally fights off the infection without any problems. For someone who is immunosuppressed, however, the infection can become life threatening and hospitalization is recommended.

Infected animals should be kept isolated from young children, the elderly and anyone suffering from an immunosuppressed condition such as HIV/AIDS.

How Common is Cryptosporidium Infection

In a study done by on stray dogs and cats in the San Bernardino City and County animal shelters, it was found that 2% of the 200 dogs were carriers, shedding the infectious cryptosporidium oocysts while 5.4% of cats were similarly infected. In itself, it is not a conclusive study as the detectable oocysts are only one part of the life cycle of the parasite and animals may have been infected but the disease was in an undetectable stage. Estimates of 15 to 20% of animals as carriers are considered more realistic.

Cryptosporidium transmission is possible to humans from cats, dogs and livestock. Cryptosporidium, a coccidian protozoon, is the cause of 2 to 6% of self-limiting diarrhea in pediatric cases.

Preventing Cat Diarrhea and Combating a Possible Infection of Cat Cryptosporidium

Cryptosporidium oocysts, the infectious stage of the life cycle, are hardy, resisting bleach and most normal cleansers. Extreme temperatures and prolonged exposure to ammonia is the only effective way to kill the oocysts.

If your cat is diagnosed as a carrier, keep them inside to prevent further infection of other animals. Clean their kitty litter and water dishes regularly with ammonia. Rinse well after cleaning.

Feeding high quality, high fiber food helps regulate the diarrhea associated with cryptosporidium in cats and always provide fresh, filtered water.

Supplements to help support the immune system will shorten the length of the infection and help reduce the impact or severity of the disease. A vital part of your pet's immune system is a healthy digestive tract and will reduce the impact of the cryptosporidium oocysts on the intestinal walls. Adding soil-based probiotics to your cat's daily regime can help prevent this common parasite from infecting your beloved pet.

Cryptosporidium is a common problem amongst outdoor cats and although it can be devastating, supporting your cat's immune system and always feeding her the best quality food can help lessen the overall impact.

Fruits and Vegetables for Energy

A diet of f fresh fruits and vegetables can boost a person's energy levels and their disposition. Unlike processed foods, fruits and vegetables, especially if they're organic, contain no fillers or preservatives and are full of nutrients.

High in Fiber

Fruits and vegetables are high in fiber, which is protective against diseases like cardiovascular illneses and breast and colon cancers. More, fiber helps with gastrointestinal woes including ulcers and gallstones. Fiber is the part of plants that the human body doesn't break down, so it passes through the system more or less intact. Fiber can be soluble or insoluble. Many vegetables contain both types.

Insoluble fibers like cellulose are important in protecting against colon cancer and also delay the absorption of glucose into the bloodstream, which is important for people suffering from diabetes. Insoluble fiber acts like a sponge and adds bulk to the stool while it absorbs toxins. Insoluble fibers are usually found on the skin of fruits.

Soluble fibers help lower blood cholesterol and also slow the rate of glucose getting into the bloodstream. These types of fibers are found in vegetables and fruits.

Both types of fiber promote the health of the gastrointestinal system. When the gastrointestinal system isn't working well, either because of diarrhea, constipation, gas or bloating, a person can't feel right, either mentally or physically. A healthy and well functioning gastrointestinal track leads to people feeling energetic and mentally sharp. Vegetables that are high in fiber include Brussels sprouts, peas, carrots, broccoli, green beans, beets, iceberg lettuce, corn and celery. Fruits that are high in fiber include fresh strawberries, dried dates, oranges, apples, pineapples, bananas, prunes, cantaloupes and grapes.

Low In Fat

Most fruits and vegetables are low in fat and have no cholesterol, which is a product of the liver. Too much fat and cholesterol in the diet form a waxy substance that circulates around the bloodstream till some kind of damage to an artery causes it to stick to its walls. This causes the artery to narrow and sometimes to harden, which is a condition called atherosclerosis. This leads to high blood pressure.

Calcium

Many vegetables are surprisingly high in calcium, which strengthens bones and teeth and lowers blood pressure as well as the risk of colon cancer. But when it comes to raising energy levels nothing works like magnesium and potassium, two minerals that combat fatigue. Low levels of magnesium cause depression, irritability and confusion. People with chronic fatigue syndrome claimed to have felt better after receiving weekly shots of magnesium for about six weeks, which caused physicians to believe that chronic fatigue syndrome might be at least partially caused by a magnesium deficiency. Green, leafy vegetables like kale are full of magnesium.

Potassium can also help prevent heart disease and stroke and can lower blood pressure. People who are low in potassium retain more sodium, which can contribute to high blood pressure and actually lose calcium. Because fruits and vegetables are high in potassium, some researches claim that an extra serving of fruits and vegetables can lower a person's risk of stroke by about 40 percent.

It's clear that a diet full of fruits and vegetables can help a person feel full of energy and vibrant.

Doggie Diarrhea & Doggie Vomiting

Diarrhea and vomiting are two of the most common reasons dogs are brought into the vet's office. Here is a guide to help you understand how to deal with both of these problems. Because both diarrhea and vomiting have a multitude of causes ranging from minor to life-threatening, if you have any doubt as to the cause or severity of your dog's diarrhea or vomiting you should not hesitate to contact or visit your vet immediately.

Diarrhea - loose, unformed stool - can be caused by no more than a small gastrointestinal upset or a bout nerves or it can be a symptom of a more serious problem requiring immediate care such as parvovirus or a twisting or collapse of the bowel area. Chronic diarrhea can also indicate an underlying disease such as exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, pancreatitis and certain tumors including lymphoma and adenocarcinoma. However, two of the most common causes of diarrhea in dogs are intestinal parasites such as giardiasis and roundworm and dietary causes such as switching food too quickly or eating spoiled food.

Diarrhea is categorized based on the location of the problem causing the diarrhea. Diarrhea is considered large bowel when the problem causing the diarrhea occurs in the colon or large intestine. Symptoms of large bowel diarrhea are feces with mucous (sometimes the feces will look like jelly) and red blood. Your dog may strain to defecate, and the amount of feces produced may or may not be larger than normal. Some causes of large bowel diarrhea are gastrointestinal parasites (giardiasis or roundworm for example), inflammatory bowel disease, tumors, large bowel bacterial overload, dietary changes or indiscretions, medications and stress. Diarrhea is considered small bowel when the problem is located in the small intestines. Symptoms of small bowel diarrhea include increased feces volume and changes in feces color. In general, there will be no mucous in the feces, and your dog will not usually strain to defecate. Some causes of small bowel diarrhea are small bowel bacterial overload, inflammatory bowel disease, other malabsorption diseases, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, food allergies, tumors and gastrointestinal parasites.

If your dog has diarrhea that contains a lot of blood or mucous, if his stomach seems bloated, if his gums are pale or a strange color, or if he seems upset, lethargic, weak, or in pain he needs to go to the veterinarian immediately. Repeated diarrhea in puppies, senior dogs, and dogs with any pre-existing health condition also requires veterinary assistance.

If your young or middle-aged generally healthy dog has diarrhea, but seems otherwise normal, you can try a homecare remedy to see if the diarrhea resolves itself. You should of course put a phone call into your vet to make sure this is appropriate for your dog before starting on the homecare remedy. To treat diarrhea at home, first do not give your dog any food at all for about twelve hours, but allow him all the fresh water he wants to drink. It is important that your dog drink because diarrhea can lead to dehydration. Upon consultation with your vet you may also mix your dog's water with an electrolyte solution such as Pedialyte® - generally one gives ½ water and ½ electrolyte solution. After 12 hours, you can begin feeding your dog a small portion of 3 parts plain boiled white rice and 1 part plain white meat boiled chicken breast. Feed him this bland diet in small quantities four times a day until his diarrhea resolves. Your vet may also allow you to give your dog a small amount of Pepto-Bismol® or Kaopectate®. However, it is essential that you adhere to your vet's recommendation regarding the safety and the dosage of these medications because they contain subsalicylates which can be harmful in dogs in elevated doses. If your dog's diarrhea does not disappear after a day or two on a bland diet, take him to the veterinarian. Of course, if at any point, your dog seems to get worse, you should take him to the vet.

Vomiting is the forceful expulsion of undigested food or stomach contents. The active effort of vomiting will usually require your dog to visibly contract the belly. Vomiting is to be distinguished from regurgitation in which there is a backflow of food contents without any active effort on the part of your dog. With regurgitation your dog may cough, but will not heave his belly.

Vomiting can be the result of a multitude of underlying conditions from a minor stomach upset, fear, or excitement to a true medical emergency such as an ingestion of toxic substance, acute pancreatitis, or even bloat. Vomiting can also be caused by many underlying diseases and condition such as ulcers, tumors, diabetes mellitus, or worms.

You should visit your veterinarian right away if your dog is vomiting repeatedly, seems very weak, or has a swollen belly. Vomiting in puppies, senior dogs, and dogs with any pre-existing health condition also requires veterinary assistance.

Vomit that contains red blood or digested blood, a dark substance that looks like coffee grounds, also means your dog needs immediate vet attention. The red or digested blood generally indicates your dog is bleeding internally, usually at a point somewhere between his mouth and bowels.

Vomit that looks and smells like feces also requires immediate veterinary attention. Vomit with a feces-like odor or appearance can be a sign of intestinal obstruction.

Projectile vomiting - in which the vomit is ejected forcefully and a considerable distance from your dog's mouth - also requires a visit to the vet. Projectile vomiting is often caused by an obstruction somewhere in your dog's stomach.

If your dog repeatedly tries to vomit but nothing is produced, especially if these actions are accompanied by a swollen and painful abdomen, this is often the sign of bloat, a life-threatening condition requiring immediate medical attention.

You should also take your dog immediately to the veterinarian if you suspect the vomiting has been triggered by your dog's ingestion of a toxic substance or any non-food item.

If your young middle-aged generally healthy dog who seems otherwise normal and whose bouts of vomiting do not adhere to any of the "go to the vet" triggers above, upon checking with your vet, you can try a homecare remedy. To rest your dog's stomach, withhold food for at least 10 to 12 hours. You should also withhold water for the first 4-6 hours, but give your dog an ice cube to lick hourly. You are trying to rest his stomach, but you do not want to dehydrate him. After 4 hours, you may offer your dog 1/4 to 1/2 cup of water every two hours until the 10-12 hour rest period has elapsed. Upon consultation with your vet, you may also mix your dog's water with an electrolyte solution such as Pedialyte® - generally one gives ½ water and ½ electrolyte solution. After 10-12 hours, you may resume allowing your dog normal access to water and you can begin feeding him a small portion of 3 parts plain boiled white rice with 1 part plain white meat boiled chicken breast. Feed him this bland diet in small quantities 4 times a day until his vomiting resolves. Of course, if at any point, your dog seems to get worse, you should take him to the vet.

Complications of Feline Diabetes

Feline diabetes can have many complications. Skin problems, liver and kidney damage, weakness in your kitty's legs, and an increased risk of infections are possible. It's important to monitor your furry friend's blood sugar levels carefully every day to prevent these problems.

Your kitty develops this disease when his pancreas either doesn't produce enough insulin, or when his body doesn't use insulin efficiently. The lack of insulin causes his body to start breaking down his own fat and protein for energy, instead of the starches and carbohydrates in his food. This causes him to lose weight, even though he's eating more. His body tries to flush out the extra sugar in his blood by making him drink more, and this leads to increased urination.

Feline diabetes, if not treated, will certainly shorten your friend's lifespan. Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a potentially fatal condition that's caused when your kitty's body uses his fat for energy. The result is that acids called ketones are produced. When they circulate in the blood, ketones cause loss of appetite, nausea, and lethargy.

DKA is often a result of undiagnosed diabetes. This is an emergency, and your furry friend needs immediate veterinary care with IV fluids to stabilize him. Diabetic neuropathy in cats may be an early sign of this disease in your kitty. It can also show up in later stages. Weakness in his back legs is a result of nerve damage caused by high blood glucose levels. Your kitty will walk or stand with his hocks (the "elbows" of his back legs) touching the ground.

If your buddy had this disease for a long time before it was controlled, he may lose some function in his back legs, due to the nerve damage. But sometimes the weakness in his legs is called by muscle wasting from disuse. In this case, exercise is helpful, and it can reduce his dependence on insulin.

Hepatic lipidosis is a liver disease that is a serious complication. Overweight kitties seem to develop this problem more often. When your buddy stops eating for whatever reason, his body starts using his fat for energy. If too much fat is broken down, it builds up in his liver, causing it to swell. Symptoms of hepatic lipidosis include refusing to eat, vomiting, weight loss, lethargy, and jaundice. Your kitty may have a yellowish look to the whites of his eyes, his gums, and the insides of his ears.

Trying to get him to eat is essential. Your vet may have to put in a feeding tube if he won't eat anything. While this condition is usually fatal if it's not treated, most kitties do recover after tube feeding.

Vomiting and diarrhea and other stomach upsets are common with diabetic kitties. Pancreatitis, which is a painful inflammation of the pancreas, can lead to maldigestion syndrome. In this condition, the pancreas doesn't produce enough digestive enzymes. Your kitty can't digest the food he eats, and he can starve, even though he's eating.

Your buddy is more prone to infections, too. Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common, and UTIs that keep coming back can be a sign that your buddy's blood sugar levels are too high.

Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, can be very dangerous. It's usually caused by an overdose of insulin. This can happen if he's skipped a meal or threw up after you gave him insulin. Hypoglycemia can also be caused by extra exercise, too.

Low blood sugar may cause your furball to become weak and listless, start drooling, and lose his coordination. He may have convulsions or go into a coma, which can be fatal. Feed him right away, and if he can't swallow, rub some corn syrup on his gums. Don't put your fingers in his mouth if he's having seizures!

To avoid complications, it's important to establish a routine with your furry friend. He needs to eat the same amount of food every day at the same time. Try to avoid making big changes in the amount of exercise he gets. Be sure he get the same dose of insulin at the same time each day too.

Getting the Best Out of Xanax

Human psychology has already accepted the co-existence of good and evil right from the moment Adam and Eve ate the apple of knowledge. There is happiness with sorrow, pleasure with pain, truth with lie, beauty with ugliness and so forth. You have seen the happy moments of your life as well as the moments of sorrow. Sometimes the memory and fear of the bad time keeps on haunting you and you are so much overwhelmed that you forget to smile. Are you depressed and full of anxiety all the time? Are you in a situation which can be called a disorder?

Do not underestimate your depression and anxiety, they are real life enemies and you should never underestimate your enemies. Let me tell you the symptoms of anxiety disorder so that you can compare and understand your condition. There are certain physical symptoms of anxiety disorder, e.g. rapid or irregular heartbeat, stomach problems like gnawing feeling, nausea, "butterflies in the stomach" diarrhea, irritated bowel syndrome, sweating, or feeling cold and clammy headaches, lightheadedness or dizziness, body tension or aches, fatigue or shortness of breath shaking, trembling or twitching difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, hot flashes or chills, chest pain, rubbery legs, tingling in fingers or toes. At the same time there are some emotional symptoms as well like a general sense of apprehension and dread, nervousness, jumpiness, irritation, fearfulness or terror, isolation from others, feeling incredibly self-conscious and insecure, and fear that you are dying or going crazy strong desire to escape.

If you have the following symptoms prevalent, you must take care of yourself and seek medical help. There are treatment available combining medications as well as therapies for anxiety disorder. Benzodiazepine is the most successful medication for anxiety disorder and Xanax, a type of Benzodiazepine is one of the most popular medicines for this purpose. Xanax is also effective in the treatment of activity depression and panic attacks. At the same time it is useful in treating irritable bowel syndrome and anxiety due to a neurosis. Xanax may help the symptoms of PMS and also used to relieve anxiety, nervousness, and tension associated with anxiety disorders, agoraphobia, essential tremor, fibromyalgia (low dosage), and ringing ears.

But, as I said earlier, we must accept that there are two sides of every aspect or a thing, one is good, and one is bad. Human being has not even spared Xanax, and used it as an intoxicating drug, rather abused it. As Xanax affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause anxiety, it slows down the brain functioning causing a drowsy feeling for the person. It is a Central Nervous System (CNS) 'calmer' and addiction happens when it is used for a long term, not more than eight months. It is this tolerance that compels the user of xanax to take more and more pills to feel the same effect. As the body of the user becomes more and more habituated, the 'calming effect' of Xanax in the body demands more of dosages of Xanax to get the desired level. The result, as you can very well understand, is addiction. Your daily dose of 2 pills of 25mg each increase to dosages of 4 pills or more a day. Gradually, a person thinks of taking 5,10,20,40 or even 80 pills on a given day to remain 'normal'. This is the condition when he is actually addicted to Xanax.

In this situation, Xanax should not be stopped abruptly, I must tell you, and you should not stop taking xanax abruptly at any time. That may cause severe withdrawal syndrome. In normal situation the doctor will gradually decrease the dosage and when a person is addicted to Xanax, psychotherapy along with medication is required. The best part is, unlike other anti-anxiety and antidepressants, withdrawing from xanax is much easy and never life threatening. The main line to remember is, never forget to consult a doctor before taking Xanax and follow doctor's advice till the time you are completely recovered from anxiety disorder. Trust me, you can live a better life, you deserve it!

Bird Flu: Human Infection

Bird flu is a disease caused by a specific type of avian (bird) influenza virus, the so-called H5N1 virus. This virus was first discovered in birds in China in 1997, and since then has infected 125 people in Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Indonesia, killing 64 of them. It is spread by infected migratory birds (including wild ducks and geese) to domestic poultry (primarily chickens, ducks, and turkeys), and then to humans.

Some infected people have developed abnormal clotting profiles resulting in excessive bleeding—which was a frequent clinical symptom in the deadly so-called Spanish influenza of 1918-19, which killed more than 100 million people worldwide. Indeed, bird flu shares a number of disturbing characteristics with the 1918-19 influenza virus. These two viruses have, in fact, recently been shown to be similar genetically. And in a recent laboratory experiment with mice, the 1918-19 virus was found to produce 39,000 times more viruses four days after infection than the regular seasonal human flu strain. The 1918-19 virus killed 100 percent of the mice that were infected with it, compared to none of the mice infected with the regular flu strain. With a current “case fatality rate,” or death rate of approximately 50 percent in humans, bird flu is obviously also a very deadly disease.

There are only a few reports in the medical literature describing the clinical features of bird flu in humans. The clinical spectrum of H5N1 infection ranges from asymptomatic infection—where the person doesn’t even know he or she is infected—to fatal pneumonia and multiple organ failure. Some infected individuals develop liver or kidney dysfunction, and there were two children who died from the virus that came to medical attention because of diarrhea and seizures related to encephalitis (infection of the brain). However, the most common presentation is one of fever, cough, and trouble breathing. Approximately 70 percent of patients also have diarrhea, and a few patients have had only gastrointestinal symptoms (such as stomach ache, vomiting, and diarrhea) and no breathing problems.

Deaths have generally been in normally healthy people. The first report in the medical literature of deaths from bird flu was on 12 patients living in Hong Kong. Their median age was nine years, with a range of one to 60 years. All presented with fever, and eight had symptoms or signs of upper-respiratory infections (five had clinical and X-ray evidence of pneumonia when first diagnosed). Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, including stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea, were present in eight patients. There were a total of five deaths (one died with Reye’s syndrome, which is associated with taking aspirin in children).

In a study of 10 patients in Vietnam with laboratory-confirmed avian influenza (H5N1), the mean age of the patients was 13.7 years. For eight of the patients, there was a clear history of either direct handling of poultry (chickens or ducks) or exposure to sick poultry in the week before the onset of illness. All presented in January 2004 with cough, shortness of breath, and fever, and seven had diarrhea; none had myalgia (muscle aches)—which is often found in the regular seasonal flu. Notably, oseltamivir (Tamiflu) was administered to five patients, four of whom died (treatment was probably started too late for the medication to be effective—it must be given within 48 hours after onset of symptoms to be effective). In total, eight of the patients died, for an 80 percent case fatality rate or death rate.

As is apparent from the descriptions above, the presenting symptoms of individuals with bird flu are very similar to the symptoms of the normal seasonal flu. Infections caused by either the bird-flu virus (H5N1) or the seasonal influenza virus can be completely asymptomatic—that is, cause no symptoms at all. Fever, cough, malaise (feeling ill), and gastrointestinal symptoms are common to both infections. Excessive bleeding occurs only with bird flu, but currently this symptom doesn’t appear to be common. Difficulty breathing is more common with severe cases of bird flu, not seasonal flu. Runny nose and sneezing are found only with colds (or allergies).

The cough in either type of infection is what is referred to in medicine as “nonproductive”—meaning there is no sputum brought up when coughing, or if any sputum is brought up, it is white in color. This type of cough is characteristic of upper respiratory viral infections. As either type of infection progresses or worsens, tissues may be damaged, disrupting the normal structure and function of the infected cells. This in turn may allow bacteria to grow and also cause damage. When this happens following a viral infection, it is referred to as a “secondary” bacterial infection. When this occurs, the color of the sputum characteristically turns yellow or green. If this happens, antibiotics are indicated to treat the bacterial infection. (Antibiotics are not indicated in the treatment of viral infections, because they don’t work.)

It is safe to assume that during a bird-flu pandemic, most individuals who become infected with the bird-flu virus will either be asymptomatic—having no symptoms—or their illness will not be severe enough to require hospitalization. The small percentage who do become seriously ill will have to be hospitalized, and treated with either of the two antiviral agents available, oseltamivir (Tamiflu) or zanamivir (Relenza). A smaller subset of that group will develop life-threatening complications such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), which requires treatment with a mechanical ventilator, a respirator.

Some individuals may develop other serious complications such as liver failure, kidney failure, neurological problems—such as seizures, paralysis, psychiatric problems such as delirium or psychosis, or bleeding problems. However, it is reasonable to predict that most people infected with the virus will not die and will not have significant residual symptoms, although a small percentage will.

Intestinal Organism Imbalance - Doing A Cleanse to Clear and Re-Energize You

The father of modern medicine, Hippocrates, said, "Death begins in the colon." Ayurvedic medicine from India, the most ancient and complete system of natural healthcare, states that all chronic health conditions arise from the intestines, and a tenet in Traditional Chinese Medicine says that the heart is the 'supreme emperor' and the intestines are the 'prime minister.' This gives you an idea of the importance of a well- balanced gastrointestinal tract.

Dysbiosis refers to any imbalance of the micro-organisms inhabiting the lining of your intestines. A healthy GI tract should ideally have at least 85% friendly lactobacteria (like the kind one gets from yogurt) and no more than 15% unfriendly or toxic coliform bacteria, yeast and fungus. But typically in our Western society the balance is the opposite!

The good bacteria should keep the harmful organisms suppressed and in low numbers. But sugary diets and the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics, birth control pills, steroidal drugs and even the chlorine in tap water, disturbs the good bacteria and encourages the bad organisms, especially yeast (fungus) to overgrow. This is how vaginal yeast infections occur following courses of antibiotics.

The same thing happens much more commonly in our intestines and is referred to as 'candidiasis' or candida yeast infection. As the yeast multiply they send rootlets into the intestinal wall, release toxins, and create 'leaky gut syndrome'. This condition permits organisms and toxins to enter the blood stream and deeper tissues where widespread damage can occur.

Because dysbiosis usually goes undiagnosed for a long time and so many organs and tissues can be affected, a wide array of conditions and symptoms can result. The list of symptoms are as diverse as nervous and mental disorders or food and chemical sensitivities. Below is a list of symptoms and conditions that can be caused by dysbiosis:

Gastrointestinal: heartburn, gas and bloating, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn's disease, colitis, diarrhea, constipation.

Genitourinary: bladder, urinary tract and kidney infections, yeast vaginitis, menstrual irregularities, infertility, endometriosis, PMS.

Nervous system: memory loss, inability to concentrate (brain fog), irritability, depression, lethargy, chronic fatigue, loss of libido, numbness and tingling, twitches, headaches, hyperactivity, learning problems, autism.

General: mitral valve prolapse, allergy symptoms, asthma, sinusitis, earaches and ear infections, psoriasis, cold hands and feet, joint pain/stiffness, increased body hair, food cravings, food and chemical sensitivities/intolerances, overeating.

There have even been cases of patients thought to be suffering from lupus, schizophrenia, myasthenia gravis, anorexia nervosa and multiple sclerosis who recovered following treatment for dysbiosis.

The cleanse is intended to clear dysbiosis and restore the normal healthy balance of organisms in your intestines. It is sometimes necessary to take acidophilus and other 'probiotics' to re-inoculate the intestines, but it is far more important to skillfully kill off the offending organisms. The muscle-testing allows us to select the right supplements for each individual for this purpose, pinpointing their needs and ensuring accuracy.

Proper diet can prevent and in some cases cure many health problems. In the case of dysbiosis, it is absolutely essential. This specific diet removes the foods that encourage yeast and fungus growth and mucous production. It requires some commitment since it is not an easy one. It also requires some sacrifice.

You may even say, "What's left to eat?" or "I'd rather just suffer than give up so much!" But take heart. This diet is temporary. Although some people will need to avoid foods forever that give them bad reactions, most people will be able to eat the forbidden foods again, once they have completed the program. Occasionally people experience a 'die-off reaction' during the cleanse as the offending organisms release their toxins.

The symptoms may include headache, rash, flu symptoms or fatigue. They are usually mild if they occur and only last a day or two and happen only in a minority of cases. Check in with me if you need to. Occasionally you can develop full-blown sinusitis and allergies during the cleanse. This is due to your immune system taking a slight dip initially and simultaneously catching a wave of pollens or flu bugs passing through the area. This is very uncommon but I feel the warning is healthy.

The average length of time for the cleanse is 3 weeks, but it may take longer. I will need to see you for a follow up appointment at 2 weeks, and then again before you are released from the cleanse diet. There are many common foods you will need to avoid during the cleanse. After the program, you will be able to reintroduce them one-by-one into your diet and see how each one affects you. The guidelines are on the next page.

Cleanse:

Take your supplements religiously and strictly avoid the following foods until I check you to ensure the candida is safely cleared from your system:

AVOID: Sugar and all sweeteners: cookies, candy, chocolate, pastries, ice cream, soda, etc.; honey, molasses, real or artificial maple syrup, agave nectar, corn syrup, rice syrup, fructose, dextrose, maltose, xylitol, etc., fruit (except for green Granny Smith apples), fruit juice, dried fruit, etc.

Many foods have corn syrup, and drinks such as soy and rice milk usually have rice syrup or cane juice, a few (the 'unsweetened' ones) don't. Note: When reading food labels, ignore the section that indicates "grams of sugar". Only be concerned with the list of food ingredients when looking for sugar and sweeteners.

Milk products: milk, yoghurt and cheeses, especially aged cheeses like cheddar, Swiss, parmesan, blue, etc. Occasionally we allow butter and soft cheeses like cottage, farmers, feta, mozzarella and jack.

Bread products: bread, buns, bagels, crackers, etc.; Any baked goods containing yeast, and any sourdough or sprouted grain products.

Fermented products: beer, wine, liquor, vinegar (salad dressings, ketchup, pickles, olives, relish, etc.), tamari, soy sauce, miso, tempeh, natto, sauerkraut, sourkraut, kambucha.

Miscellaneous: coffee, black tea, Worcestershire or A-1 sauce, mushrooms, packaged foods with lots of unfamiliar ingredients, monosodium glutamate (MSG-ask the owners of your Chinese restaurant if they use it), processed and smoked meats, french fries (they are often dipped in sugar), artificial colorings, flavorings and sweeteners (aspartame, Splenda, etc.), margarine. Avoid nuts and corn if you have multiple food sensitivities.

Any foods you tested allergic too:_____________________________________

ALLOWED: You may freely eat vegetables, chicken, fish, beef, seafood, eggs, beans and lentils, tortillas, and healthy oils (olive, flax, coconut, etc). Keep moderate on starchy foods. You may have rice (preferably brown

rice), whole wheat pasta, potatoes (preferably sweet potatoes, yams and red skinned), oatmeal and hot cereals (unsweetened) and alternative grains like quinoa, amaranth and millet. For salad dressing you may use olive oil and a squeeze of lemon.

For soy sauce you may use Bragg's Liquid Amino's from the health food store because it's non-fermented. For tomato sauce, make sure it has no sugar. For sweetener you may use Stevia. Generally

found in liquid droppers in the health food store; it is an herbal extract 300X sweeter than sugar (but does not feed yeast), so you only need a drop or two in tea for example.

MEAL IDEAS:

Breakfast: Eggs, oatmeal or whole-grain hot cereal with green apple cubes, cinnamon and stevia, rice cakes, almond butter, meats, veggies...

Lunch and Dinner: Brown rice, whole wheat pasta, chicken, fish, potatoes, beans, veggies, salad, avocado, rice noodles...

Snacks: green apples, almond butter, celery, carrots, rice cakes, hard-boiled eggs,

IMPORTANT!: After 3 to 4 weeks on the cleanse you come in for re-testing. If you test negative for yeast and your symptoms are gone it means their population is now below the threshold level.

But you MUST come in for the re-evaluation or it could all end up being for naught. If you had food sensitivities, they may be gone or it may take some time to change your body's response to those foods.

How to Treat Diabetes by Juicing

Treating Diabetes by Juicing can be as simple as extracting the fresh juice from raw fruit and vegetables. People with diabetes mellitus cannot properly process glucose, a sugar the body uses for energy. As a result, glucose stays in the blood, causing blood glucose levels to rise.

JUICES USED TO TREAT DIABETES

Daily Juicing of vegetables and fruits can be used in any combination of the following: ginger, garlic, celery, pumpkin, cabbage, asparagus, parsley, spinach, leeks, spinach, beets and carrots. Juicing fresh green vegetables such as brussel sprouts and string beans is a wonderful health benefit as both are good sources of natural insulin. Nutrients such as silicon works to support
the pancreas and are found in alfalfa, olives, asparagus, lettuce, mustard greens, radishes, cabbage and cucumbers. Use fruit combinations sparingly due to their high sugar content. Sweet juices such as carrot, beet, grape, apple or pear juice should be half diluted with water or mixed with other juices such as celery.

Make only as much juice as needed for immediate use. In storage including refrigeration, raw juices oxidize rapidly and lose their medicinal value in as little as 10 minutes.

Bitter Melon juice has been used to treat diabetes mellitus (according to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians). The plant contains at least three known compounds that can lower the body's blood sugar level. Recommended serving per day is 2 ounces of fresh bitter melon juice.

Mangosteen juice used as a supplement under medical supervision may decrease blood sugar levels and benefit those with type 2 diabetes. Recommended dose per day is 1 ounce or 30ml of Mangosteen juice to be taken before a meal.

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Grapefruit juice interacts badly with certain prescription drugs. Please check with your physician.
Diabetics who are taking the following medication should not use bitter melon juice: chlorpropamine, glyburide, phenformin, or insulin. This can increase the effects of these drugs and lead to severe hypoglycemia. Diabetics should consult their medical professional before taking this juice.

MEDICAL PRECAUTIONS

If you have complications in pregnancy such as gestational diabetes or blood pressure problems please check the use of mangosteen juice with your physician.
Always take fruit juices with food.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends limiting fruit juice for children under 6 years of age to four to six ounces a day.

Bitter melon is an abortifacient, so women who are pregnant or nursing should not take it. Do not give this melon to small children and infants due to its hypoglycemic effects. Bitter melon is also an emmenagogue, which means that it encourages or increases menstrual flow in women.

AVOID

Due to high sugar content, diabetes may be aggravated by excessive intake of sweet juices such as carrots and most fruits.
Excessive intake of tomato and citrus juices could upset the body's natural acid (pH) balance as they are highly acidic.

SIDE EFFECTS

According to the American Foundation of Traditional Chinese Medicine: If too much bitter melon juice is taken; it can cause mild abdominal pain or diarrhea.

Multiple servings of Mangosteen juice tend to raise blood sugar initially even with as little as 15ml. This has been observed more often in people of Asian descent who are not obese.

PRELIMINARY TRIALS

Two preliminary trials found that aloe vera juice (containing 80% aloe gel) helps lower blood sugar levels in people with Type 2 diabetes.

August 29, 2006 -- Drinking pomegranate juice may help people with diabetes reduce their risk of heart disease. In the small study, published in the journal Atherosclerosis, researchers examined the effects: of drinking a concentrated form of pomegranate juice. Michael Aviram, researcher of the Techion Faculty of Medicine in Haifa, Israel, says:

"Patients with type 2 diabetes (who were not dependent on insulin therapy) were tested. Blood sugar levels were not affected which suggests that the antioxidants found in pomegranate juice may be especially beneficial in reducing heart-related risks associated with diabetes."

The American Association of Naturopathic Physicians in Seattle has a referral database of naturopathic physicians: who practice juice treatments throughout the United States.
Daily juicing of primarily organic vegetables and fruits is a beneficial part of any long term program to treat diabetes. Juicing provides a highly effective and efficient way for the body to be able to absorb essential nutrients into the blood and cells. Drinking juice is one of the best and quickest ways for the body to utilize these nutrients within minutes instead of hours.

How to Stop Diarrhea - Quick & Simple Tips on How to Stop Diarrhea

We have all experienced at one time or another in our lives a bout of diarrhea and it is pretty awful to go through. There is usually extreme cramping in the stomach area as well as the constant feeling of needing to have a bowel movement at any time. Thankfully there are many remedies for this problem so in this article I will cover how to stop diarrhea for you.

One main side effect of diarrhea which has potentially very harmful effects is dehydration so the main concern you should have is keeping yourself hydrated by drinking as much water as you can handle during the day. Many people have had to be hospitalized for dehydration as a result of diarrhea and it is so easily avoidable if you do not let it get that severe.

So there you have 5 strategies on how to stop diarrhea. There are a multitude of natural remedies available for you to cure your diarrhea so try these above and do further research if you like to find other effective ways on stopping diarrhea.

A Thorough Treatment Process For Diaper Rashes

Diaper rashes are one of the reasons that keep you and your baby awake in the middle of the night. Sometimes, your baby cries so hard that you don't know exactly what to do. There is no reason to panic in the first place if you are sure that what causes baby to cry is purely diaper rashes. However, in case your child doesn't stop crying, follow these steps thoroughly.

Making a simple diagnosis will help you come up with solution. Check your baby's back part and look for symptoms of diaper rashes. Rashes are usually accompanied by redness, swelling, and even tiny wounds in the skin. If these signs are present, then your baby definitely has diaper rashes.

Think of the reason that might have caused the rashes. Usually, diaper rashes are a result of infrequent changing of diapers. When the diaper is full of excretion, it can lead to skin irritation when ignored for a long time, thus the appearance of rashes. Urine has the ability to increase the skin's acidity. Fecal enzymes as well due to diarrhea can have similar results.

Once you have determined the exact cause for the rashes, eliminate it at once. If your baby has diarrhea, have the condition treated immediately. To get rid of the rashes, consider applying zinc oxide or other ointments that are proven effective in removing redness and swelling. You can also try Tylenol products since they are excellent to fight against skin allergies.

Use preventive measures to keep your baby safe from rashes. Make it a habit of changing the diapers immediately once they are full. One of the reasons why babies get rashes is that parents have no schedule to follow when it comes to diaper changing. Also, since rashes can be a result of diarrhea, make sure you feed your baby with foods that can easily be digested.

There is no need any more for you to wake up in the middle of the night just because your baby is having diaper rashes. Take advantage of these steps and apply them. After a few weeks, you will notice that your baby is feeling better, free from rashes and free from discomfort!

What Do You Feed A Goldfish

The most important thing to remember about feeding is that they cannot digest excess protein. So the food you choose has to be low on proteins and high on carbohydrates. A proper diet for your goldfish will be varied and will follow proper procedures and will be in right quantities.

All species require different diets and it is imperative for you to know the correct diet of the specie you are feeding. Goldfish do not thrive well on carnivorous diet and become dull colored and sluggish if fed a carnivorous diet. You can make the goldfish diet healthier by supplementing it with shelled and deskinned peas and blanched green leafy vegetables. Again, be careful about the quantity.

Feeding the fish only one type of food can cause constipation, diarrhea and even diseases since over time the fish's resistance is lowered owing to poor nutrition. You should give your goldfish a variety in food. For instance, add lettuce and brine shrimp to the flakes. With variety your goldfish will become more active and colorful.

Did you know that can actually eat till they burst? Yes! The intestines of goldfish may actually burst, killing the fish due to overfeeding. Goldfish do not stop eating on their own, therefore you have to caliberate their diet. As a general rule, feed your fish only twice a day and only as much as they can consume in 3-4 minutes.

Chemical Free Laundry Detergent For Your Family and Your Future

Everyday choices affect the health of our families and our environment. Watkins Natural Lemon Liquid Laundry Detergent is ultra concentrated and requires only 1 ounce per load. This convenient 32 ounce bottle contains 74% less water than commercial 100 ounce detergents; and the 32 ounce packaging requires less than half the plastic. Minimize waste and your impact on the environment with Watkins Natural Lemon Liquid Laundry Detergent. Traditional laundry detergents are often petroleum-based. These detergents deplete a nonrenewable resource and create pollution when manufactured. Natural laundry detergents reduce the number of chemicals and toxins that come into direct contact with your family's skin as well as reduce energy costs and protect water supplies. This natural formula also contains a soy-based fabric softener to leave clothes feeling soft and clean. Ideal for both front loaders and high efficiency washers.

Watkins Premium Natural Cleaning Products feature plant-based formulas that are:
o Ammonia Free
o Animal Ingredient Free
o Benzene Free (Benzene exposure has serious health effects. The short term breathing of high levels of benzene can result in death, while low levels can cause drowsiness, dizziness, rapid heart rate, headaches, tremors, confusion, and unconsciousness.)
o Biodegradable
o Boron Free
o Butyl/Ethyl Cellosolve Free (Some animal studies indicate that it produces reproductive problems, such as reduced fertility, death of embryos and birth defects.[2] People exposed to high levels of 2-butoxyethanol for several hours have reported nose and eye irritation, headaches, vomiting and a metallic taste in their mouths. In addition to inhaling 2-butoxyethanol vapor, research has shown that skin can also absorb 2-butoxyethanol vapor from the air, making skin a major pathway of exposure to this chemical.)
o Chlorine Free (Chlorine is a toxic gas that irritates the respiratory system. Because it is heavier than air, it tends to accumulate at the bottom of poorly ventilated spaces. Chlorine gas is a strong oxidizer, which may react with flammable materials.)
o Diethylene Ether Free (1,4-Dioxane is a known eye and respiratory tract irritant. It is suspected of causing damage to the central nervous system, liver and kidneys.[3] Accidental worker exposure to 1,4-dioxane has resulted in several deaths.[4] Dioxane is classified by the IARC as a Group 2B carcinogen: possibly carcinogenic to humans because it is a known carcinogen in animals.)
o Dye Free
o Formaldehyde Free (Formaldehyde solutions are used as a fixative for microscopy and histology. Formaldehyde-based solutions are also used in embalming to disinfect and temporarily preserve human and animal remains.)
o Isopropanol Free (Isopropyl alcohol is oxidized by the liver into acetone by alcohol dehydrogenase. Symptoms of isopropyl alcohol poisoning include flushing, headache, dizziness, CNS depression, nausea, vomiting, anesthesia, and coma. Use in well-ventilated areas and use protective gloves while using. Poisoning can occur from ingestion, inhalation, or absorption.)
o Kerosene Free (Kerosene is widely used to power jet-engined aircraft (Jet fuel) and some rockets, but is also commonly used as a heating fuel and for fire toys such as poi.)
o Mineral Spirit Free
o Never Tested On Animals
o Non-toxic
o Petrochemical Free (Petrochemicals are chemical products made from raw materials of petroleum or other hydrocarbon origin.)
o Phosphate Free (A phosphate, an inorganic chemical, is a salt of phosphoric acid.)
o Phosphoric Acid Free (Phosphoric acid, used in many soft drinks (primarily cola), has been linked to lower bone density in epidemiological studies.)
o Propylene Glycol Free (Eye - Causes mild eye irritation. Contact may cause irritation, tearing, and burning pain.
Skin - Causes moderate skin irritation. Contact with the skin may cause erythema, dryness, and defatting.
Ingestion - May cause gastrointestinal irritation with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Low hazard for usual industrial handling. May cause hemoglobinuric nephrosis. May cause changes in surface EEG.
Inhalation - Low hazard for usual industrial handling. May cause respiratory tract irritation.
Chronic - May cause reproductive and fetal effects. Laboratory experiments have resulted in mutagenic effects. Exposure to large doses may cause central nervous system depression. Chronic ingestion may cause lactic acidosis and possible seizures.)
o Sodium Lauryl Sulfate Free (SLS can be converted by ethoxylation to sodium laureth sulfate (sodium lauryl ether sulfate; SLES), which is less harsh on the skin, probably because it is not as much of a protein denaturant as is the unethoxylated substance.)
o Sulfuric Acid Free (Although sulfuric acid is non-flammable, contact with metals in the event of a spillage can lead to the liberation of hydrogen gas. The dispersal of acid aerosols and gaseous sulfur dioxide is an additional hazard of fires involving sulfuric acid.)

Leading Laundry Cleaning Brands in Stores Ingredients

Consumers have become much more concerned about how the products they use impact the environment in recent years. Unfortunately, it can be difficult for even highly educated consumers to find out just what ingredients are in certain products, and how they might impact the environment.

Take the leading brand laundry detergents. You certainly won't get a straight answer by looking at the ingredients label, where you typically find the following cryptic message: "Ingredients include surfactants (anionic and nonionic) and enzymes."

We cannot provide you with specific ingredients used in Tide or other name brand laundry detergents, for a couple reasons. First of all, companies are not required by law to list their ingredients, and claim that their formulations are confidential. Secondly, the ingredients they use change periodically, whether due to reformulation or simply the use of alternative ingredients to reduce costs. However, the following list of ingredients commonly used in the leading brands, along with a description of how they impact the environment, should give you a good idea of what's really inside:
Alkyl benzene sulfonates or ABS (also linear alkyl benzene sulfonates or LAS, linear alkyl sodium sulfonates).

A class of synthetic surfactants (usually identified as "anionic surfactants.") ABS are very slow to biodegrade and seldom used. LAS, however, are the most common surfactants in use. During the manufacturing process, carcinogens and reproductive toxins such as benzene are released into the environment. While LAS do biodegrade, they do so slowly and are of low to moderate toxicity. LAS are synthetic. The pure compounds may cause skin irritation on prolonged contact, just like soap. Allergic reactions are rare. Because oleo-based alternatives are available, LAS should not be used.

Alkyl phenoxy polyethoxy ethanols (also nonyl phenoxy ethoxylate or nonyl phenol).

This is a general name for a group of synthetic surfactants. They are slow to biodegrade in the environment and have been implicated in chronic health problems. Researchers in England have found that in trace amounts they activate estrogen receptors in cells, which in turn alters the activity of certain genes. For example, in experiments they have been found to stimulate the growth of breast cancer cells and feminize male fish. One member of this family of chemicals is used as a common spermicide, indicating the general level of high biological toxicity associated with these compounds.

Artificial fragrances

Artificial fragrances are made from petroleum. Many do not degrade in the environment, and may have toxic effects on both fish and mammals. Additionally, they often can cause allergies and skin or eye irritation.

Diethanolamines (also diethanolamine, triethanolamine and monoethanolamine).

A synthetic family of surfactants, this group of compounds is used to neutralize acids in products to make them non-irritating. Diathanolamines are slow to biodegrade and they react with natural nitrogen oxides and sodium nitrite pollutants in the atmosphere to form nitrosamines, a family of

potent carcinogens.

EDTA (ethylene-diamino-tetra-acetate).

A class of synthetic, phosphate-alternative compounds used to reduce calcium and magnesium hardness in water. EDTA is also used to prevent bleaching agents from becoming active before they're immersed in water and as a foaming stabilizer. EDTA does not readily biodegrade and once introduced into the general environment can re-dissolve toxic heavy metals trapped in underwater sediments, allowing them to re-enter and re-circulate in the food chain.

Optical brighteners

Optical brighteners are a broad classification of many different synthetic chemicals that, when applied to clothing, convert UV light wavelengths to visible light, thus making laundered clothes appear "whiter." Their inclusion in any formula does not enhance or affect the product's performance in any way; they simply trick the eye. Optical brighteners do not readily biodegrade. They are toxic to fish when washed into the general environment and can create bacterial mutations. They can cause allergic reaction when in contact with skin that is then exposed to sunlight. Most optical brighteners are given trade names which consumers are unlikely to see on a label.

Petroleum distillates (also naphthas).

A broad category encompassing almost every type of chemical obtained directly from the petroleum refining process. Any ingredient listed as a "petroleum distillate" or "naphtha" should be suspect as it is, firstly a synthetic and, secondly, likely to cause one or more detrimental health or environmental effects.

Phosphates

A key nutrient in ecosystems, phosphates are natural minerals important to the maintenance of all life. Their role in laundry detergents is to remove hard water minerals and thus increase the effectiveness of the detergents themselves. They are also a deflocculating agent; that is, they prevent dirt from settling back onto clothes during washing. While relatively non-irritating and non-toxic in the environment, they nonetheless contribute to significant eutrophication of waterways and create unbalanced ecosystems by fostering dangerously explosive marine plant growth. For these reasons they are banned or restricted in many states. Products containing phosphates should be considered unacceptable.

Note: The major laundry detergent manufacturers no longer use phosphates in their formulations.

Polycarboxylates

Similar in chemical structure to certain plastics and acrylic compounds, these are relatively new, synthetic phosphate substitutes. Because they are recent additions to the consumer product chemical arsenal, however, their effects on human and environmental health remain largely unknown. Though tests show they are non-toxic, do not interfere with treatment plant operation and generally settle out with the sludge during water treatment, until further study and analysis are conducted, use of this ingredient is not recommended. Further, they are not biodegradable and are petroleum based.

Polyethylene glycol (also PEG).

Another type of anti-redeposition agent, PEG is a polymer made from ethylene oxide and is similar to some non-ionic detergents. Not considered toxic, it takes large doses to be lethal in animals. However, PEG is slow to degrade and is synthetic.

Quaternium 15

An alkyl ammonium chloride used as a surfactant, disinfectant and deodorant that releases formaldehyde, a potent toxin.

Xylene sulfonate

Xylene is a synthetic that, when reacted with sulfuric acid, creates a surfactant. Slow to biodegrade in the environment and moderately toxic.

Take advantage of the natural cleaning power of Watkins Lemon Liquid Laundry Concentrate Detergent and feel the difference from chemicals to naturally soft and pure.

How to Stop Back Spasms Naturally

There are many ways to relieve back spasms naturally. Of course there are other, shall we say non-natural ways to relieve back spasms. Various prescription drugs which aid in relaxing the muscles easing spasms and the pain. Most of us would probably choose natural means rather than drugs and all the various side effects as well as the expense of prescription drugs.

Of course there are times when prescription and over the counter drugs are necessary and beneficial. Think of ordinary aspirin and all the positive things it can do from headache relief to preventing a heart attack. Before looking at natural ways to stop back spasms, let's look at what causes these painful spasms. Back spasms are cause when muscles rapidly contract. This usually happens unexpectedly many times it's hard to determine an exact cause. Most spasm though painful doesn't last too long. Many of us have probably experienced spasms at one time or another. The problem occurs when you have repeated spasms. When this happens back spasms can really interfere in your daily life. These contractions can increase of time and even become permanent.

Some of the most common causes are:

1. Overworked muscles: Muscles can be overworked through exercise or work. Muscles become overtired resulting in rapid contraction of muscles.

2. Dehydration: Loss of fluids through exercise or heat, illness with resulting vomiting and diarrhea. Loss of fluids results in loss of essential salts and other important minerals such as calcium. This depleting of salts and minerals affect how muscles and nerves function.

3. Fatigue: Being overtired can lead to overworked muscles and dehydration can cause muscle spasms.

Based on some of these common causes the natural way to relieve back spasms can be fairly simple.

1. Don't overwork your muscles. Learn to give your muscles a rest. Exercising to the point of fatigue causes muscle break down and spasms.

2. Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water both before after and during exercising or physical work. It's not necessary to drink expensive energy drinks, for most of us water is the best sports drink.

3. Get a good night sleep. When your sleep your body is healing and rebuilding. Sleep is essential to preventing back spasms. If you're doing the above you should be lowering your chance of back spasms.

Now let's take the next step. Begin strengthening your body.

1. Correct stretching before and after exercising or engaging in sports, physical work and/or exercising.

2. Develop core strength. Practice Pilates or other body weight exercises that works and strengthen the core muscles.

3. Drop those pounds! Being overweight puts a strain on your back and leaves you a candidate for back spasms and pain.

4. Eat right: Stick to a diet that limits junk carbs and includes quality protein and fresh veggie and fruits. Not only will you lose weight, but you will also be putting high quality foods, vitamins and minerals into your body.

5. Taking supplements like niacin, calcium, vitamin E and magnesium can help ease spasms. Try taking them at bedtime can help lessen night cramps.

When experiencing spasms try a cold pack/hot pack. Sometimes heat and/or cold can be very effective. One may work better for some people than another. For me cold works, for my wife she swears by heat. There are alternatives to drugs. Today most people's first reaction is to call the doctor and request a drug. We expect fast relief when many times simply resting, using a heat/cold packs and if necessary an aspirin or other over the counter pain reliever can work wonders. It's important to realize that back pain and spasms are treatable with natural treatments. Beyond direct treatments taking action by exercising and losing weight can truly bring lasting relief.

Going Away? Don't Come Home To A Poisoned Pet

Many people are planning their family vacations now that the weather has improved a bit and spring has started to show her beautiful face again. Whether you are leaving your pet with a dog-sitter or are planning to stay close to home, it's always important to be aware of the dangers that can threaten your pet while you're not home.

"Every year, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control hotline handles over 150,000 cases of pets being poisoned, and many of those cases involved common household items." Dr. Steven Hansen of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) goes on to state that, "In our homes, the bathroom is the most dangerous spot for pets. The single most common reason for calls into the poison hotline is because pets have consumed medications."

Some substances, like over-the-counter medications, that are safe for people, can in fact be deadly for our pets. Even if owners are unsure about the toxicity of a substance, they should take precautions and keep it secured in closed containers and out of reach or view of their animals.

In some cases, it is not necessary that your dog eat or drink the potential poison; the poison can enter the animal's body in other ways such as if it comes in contact with their fur or paws. When pets groom themselves, either by licking their paws or fur, they will undoubtedly ingest the toxic substance and be at risk for toxicity.

Common Household Items Toxic To Pets

Often the most dangerous poisons for pets are certain "people foods" and over-the-counter or prescription drugs. However other common household items that are toxic to your pooch include:

• Anti-depressants can cause vomiting and in more severe case - serotonin syndrome; a dangerous condition that raises the body temperature, heart rate and blood pressure of your pet and can even cause seizures.

• Automotive and household chemicals are one of the most dangerous substances. Substances containing antifreeze, solvents and pool chemicals can poison pets. Symptoms include stomach disorders, depression, and chemical burns. Various cleaning, washing and bleaching agents can cause poisoning and respiratory problems.

• Avocado can also be dangerous when fed in large amounts. In the avocado there is a substance called "persin" which can cause vomiting and diarrhea in pets.

• Chocolate contains theobromine, which is a diuretic. Your dog may be very thirsty and urinate a lot - vomiting and diarrhea are usual symptoms as well. Here's the real danger...theobromine is also a cardiac stimulant so it could increase your dog's heart rate or cause irregular heart beats. For that same reason, it is also a good idea to keep coffee and caffeine away from your pet.

• Domestic plants can also be harmful to pets. Here is a list of the most toxic plants: azaleas and rhododendrons (during the flowering these plants contain toxins that can cause vomiting, diarrhea, coma and possibly death); tulips and daffodils (the bulbs of these plants can cause serious stomach problems, cramps, and damage to the heart); sago palm (a few seeds may be enough to cause vomiting, seizures and liver failure).

• Fertilizers used in the garden, which are made of dried blood, poultry manure and bone meal, are very attractive for pets but can be toxic for them if consumed.

• Fleas and tick medications are also dangerous. Each year thousands of animals around the world are inadvertently poisoned by these substances. Problems arise when a pet accidentally swallows these substances, or an overdose occurs (this is especially the matter for small pets).

• Food from people's table bears dangers as well. Pets and people have different metabolism. Some foods and drinks that are safe for humans can be dangerous and sometimes deadly for dogs.

• Grapes and raisins are also unsafe. Experts are not sure why, but these fruits can cause kidney failure in dogs. Even small amounts can cause problems.
• Medications for pets may be dangerous too. Pets can be poisoned and die from drugs meant to help them. The most common problems are encountered with overdose of prescribed painkillers.

• Nuts - We know for certain that Macadamia nuts are one of the most toxic nuts for dogs followed by walnuts and almonds especially bitter almonds. When dogs get into these delicious nuts we're not sure exactly what happens... because the toxic compound is unknown but dogs seem to develop tremors and weakness or paralysis of the hindquarters. And sometimes there is pain or swelling when you manipulate the limb or touch this area. The good news is the toxicity doesn't seem to last long; nevertheless nuts in general should be avoided.

• Onions contain the toxic ingredient, thiosulphate that causes the problem. At first you might notice some vomiting and diarrhea and your pet will become tired and lethargic. Your pet develops haemolytic anemia, which is when the red blood cells actually burst within the body. The breath in the body is much less because the red blood cells, which carry oxygen, have been reduced or destroyed.

• Over-the-counter or prescription medications for people are dangerous. Even small doses of narcotic drugs, which are okay for people, can have the opposite effect on your animals. Some of the most common and harmful drugs for dogs include non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory medications, which can lead to stomach and intestinal ulcers, or kidney failure.

• Wine, Beer or other Alcoholic Beverages - A glass of that special vintage wine is definitely a NO-NO! We mentioned how dangerous grapes are so it's logical that wine is equally as bad. Beware of alcohol poisoning, which can cause liver failure and even death.

• Xylitol as the sweetener can be found in many foods, including chewing gum and candy. Xylitol causes a rapid drop of sugar in blood, which leads to weakness and cramps. Some pets liver failure was observed, too.

All of these substances have different effects to the body of your pet. Problems will often arise beginning with the gastrointestinal tract and neurology (seizures), followed by cardiac and respiratory failure, and eventually coma and death.

Pet owners should remember that although they love and enjoy many foods, consume different medications or use chemicals indoors and outdoors, all these facts could be harmful and sometimes even deadly for their pets. They should educate themselves and share useful information on harmful agents with other pet owners.

What Are the Signs of Colic in a Baby?

You have probably heard of colic before and pray that your baby will never suffer from it. However, up to 25% of all babies do so you should be aware that it is a possibility. As a new mother you might not be an expert on babies or what symptoms of colic might be, but it helps to educate yourself so that you are aware what is happening with your baby in case he does develop colic. Remember as well that most families have as difficult a time dealing with colic as the baby does so try and identify the symptoms as early as possible in order to help find your baby some peace.

Many times doctors won't tell you that your baby has colic because it is difficult to diagnose simply because it is frequently a mixture of symptoms rather than one condition. In fact, some doctors don't even have the term "colic" in their vocabulary, but if your baby is suffering from it you will know it. There are a variety of symptoms that might represent colic that include red faces and clenched fists, reflux, grunting, hiccups, moaning, pushing and grunting, spasms, contractions, and lots and lots of crying. If your baby presents some of these symptoms or even others accompanied by inconsolable crying then your baby just might have colic.

Another sign of colic is these symptoms are frequent after a feeding and can last until the next feeding seeming like a never ending period of suffering and crying for your baby. Most doctors don' use the word colic, but do acknowledge that after eating many babies experience digestive problems due to kinked intestines that have not straightened out enough for easy digestion. Most parents that have babies with colic are sick with worry because their babies are obviously miserable and they can do nothing to soothe them or take the pain away. However, babies with colic are simply miserable with gas and do not have a fever, diarrhea, weight loss, or other symptoms at all. Because of this your baby is not really sick, but has a problem with digestion that makes them feel awful. Knowing this is important even if it doesn't make you feel much better as a parent of a colicky baby.

If your baby is one of the up to 25% of babies that develops colic you probably will become aware of the condition around six weeks of age. Then at three months the problem usually resolves itself. Of course, this seems like an impossible length of time for you and baby to go without any good sleep or comfort, but many babies and families have survived and yours will too if colic happens.

You will hate that your baby has colic and neither you nor your doctor has a miracle cure. However, knowing that your baby is not really sick and should be better in a few months will help you deal with the situation even if you feel awful about not being able to help your new bundle of joy. So, do everything you can to bond with your child and let them feel your support and do your best to make it to the three month mark when hopefully your baby is cured. If not, visit your doctor for additional tests of other potential digestive problems.
