A number of these foods will only cause a mild upset stomach for you pet while others -that I will elaborate further upon could cause major illness or even death.
Onions: The toxins that can build up in a dogs system can cause anaemia -if the dog is eating onions on a regular bases. If the white of the dogs eyes turn yellow and/or if the dog has a tongue that is pale in color -then these are signs that the dog has extreme toxins in the system. Other key signals include: urine -dark in color, vomiting and diarrhea.
Chocolate: Is toxic to the nervous system and heart, if a dog is fed too much chocolate diarrhea and vomiting will more then likely occur. The liver and Kidneys of a dog can not break down Theo-bromine which is found in chocolate and over time the build up of this chemical could be fatal to the animal.
Chicken and fish bones: These can cause digestive system lacerations. When these bones have been cooked -is when they are actually the most dangerous because they become brittle and are much more likely to splinter.
Currants: Which are many different kinds of tart red or black berries -used primarily for jellies and jams. The problem with currants is that it contains a toxin that has been associated with kidney damage.
Mushrooms: The most commonly reported severely toxic species of mushroom is the Amanita phalloides. In the US toxicity does occur in dogs and it can be fatal if certain species of mushrooms are eaten. They can cause severe liver disease and neurological disorders. If your dog does ingest mushrooms you should induce vomiting and charcoal may also be needed.
Yeast Dough: Can cause a rupture of the stomach by the accumulation of gas in your dog's digestive system. If the dough is properly cooked then it is OK for your dog as long as it's no more then 10% of the overall intake of food that your dog consumes on a daily basis.
Cat Food: Most cat food has a higher calorie content and higher protein percentage, an occasional bite of cat food probably wont hurt your dog. Too much protein in a dogs diet however, and the dog will most likely gain too much weight -and thus sustain a lack of nutrients they are missing from their own food.
Raw eggs: This one has been very controversial with veterinarians... however there is proof that too much raw eggs decrease the absorption of vitamin B (biotin) in dogs. Raw eggs have been known to help a pets hair coat -but you do run the risk of salmonella.
Raisins: Typically if a dog eats raisins they will vomit within a couple of hours and some dogs will even develop diarrhea. This is when kidney damage most likely will accrue from an unknown toxin. Very small amounts probably wont do much harm -but treatment with intravenous fluids are highly recommended if large amounts are ingested.
It is important to be educated on ALL of the hazards that certain foods can cause your pet -as they have a much different metabolism then we humans and other animal species do. The bottom line here is this: What you don't know can cause serious illness or death to your beloved dog so please -take the time to learn the best ways to protect and care for them properly!
