Is it Possible to Have Withdrawal Symptoms When Cutting Out Gluten?

Are you concerned about cutting out gluten from your diet because you think you might experience withdrawal symptoms? Or have you recently cut out gluten from your diet and now you're suffering from a whole manner of uncomfortable symptoms? Is it really possible to really suffer so badly just from cutting gluten from your diet?

Well, to answer that question: yes, you can go through a withdrawal phase when you first remove gluten from your diet. The reason for this is because gluten has a kind of opiate effect on the system and you actually become "addicted". The thing is, it's not normally thought of as an addiction since gluten is such a common part of most people's diets.

The likelihood is that when you first cut out gluten you will feel worse for a few weeks before you feel better. This is totally normal, and is just the body sorting itself out.

Aside from just riding it out until it eventually passes and you feel better, the best thing you can do during this time is to make sure you are getting plenty of good food in the rest of your diet. For example, plenty of fruit and vegetables, lots of good protein (fish, nuts, seeds, beans and pulses), and other replacement grains such as rice. It is important to keep up your nourishment, so that your body gets all the nutrients it needs and gets a steady supply of energy. If you approach it in this way, any withdrawal symptoms will feel easier to cope with.
