Panacur For Quick and Effective Pet Parasite Annihilation

The four most common types of intestinal worms are roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and tapeworms, and these can all be treated using Panacur. It is important that any parasite infections in your pet are treated quickly and thoroughly. If left alone, intestinal worms can cause a wide variety of negative symptoms such as severe itching, bloody stool, diarrhea, vomiting, reduced hair growth, lethargy and loss of appetite.

It goes without saying that any of these symptoms on their own would lead to a diminished quality of life for your pet. Fortunately, treatments like Panacur are known to be both quick and effective in eliminating not only the symptoms but the parasites themselves.

Panacur's active ingredient is called fenbendazole. This ingredient is actually able to kill the worm by disrupting it's energy metabolism. Because this disruption occurs on a cellular level, Panacur is able to kill not only the parasites but also their eggs. This means that treatment with Panacur can eliminate any current infestation and can prevent the potential future infestation that may have resulted from surviving eggs.

Panacur is relatively easy to administer. It is available in packages containing several 1, 2, or 4 gram doses. The dosage amount required for your dog depends on its weight and is typically about 1 gram for every 10 pounds. It can be added to food, and the relatively small amounts make it easy to hide. A course of treatment with Panacur lasts only three days. Side effects are not common.

Something to keep in mind when treating your pet for intestinal worms is that humans can contract roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms from their dogs. It's vital to be extra careful when handling an infected dog. Once your dog is cured, there are some simple steps that you can take to help prevent further outbreaks.

First of all, try to make sure that your dog does not have fleas. Fleas can carry certain kinds of parasites which they then pass on to your dog. Also, if you feed your dog raw meats, you need to be very careful because this can also be a source of parasites.

Finally, it is important to make sure that your dog's stools are removed daily because they are another common cause of parasite infestation. If your dog does contract intestinal worms, Panacur can safely be used again, but it is best to consult your vet before administering any treatment.

Food You Should Never Feed Your Dog

What you feed your pet determines its longevity and health. That is why it is important to pay heed to what you are feeding to them; a slight mistake in feeding can cause severe health problems and can lead to an upset stomach, diarrhea, serious health issues or even death.

There are some varieties of food that are nutritious for human beings but can be harmful for dogs. Here are some foods that one should not feed their pets.

1. Chocolates, coffee: They contain theobromine and caffeine, which are toxic to dogs if eaten in a large quantity. It can cause vomiting, diarrhea, rapid or irregular heartbeat, restlessness, muscle tremors, seizures or even death

2. Grapes and raisins: They can cause acute kidney failure. Grapes provoke vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy in dogs.

3. Avocadoes: They contain persin. Dishes that are made of avocadoes, like guacamole dips, cause vomiting and diarrhea.

4. Garlic and onions: They can damage the red blood cells; they can rupture or make them lose their capability to carry oxygen effectively, which can lead to life threatening anemia. Don't use garlic for fleas; it is harmful rather than helpful.

5. Macadamia nuts: Although they are an excellent source of vitamin E for humans, they are fatal for canines. Just a few macadamia nuts can cause vomiting, tremors, weakness and joint pain.

6. Xylitol: It is an artificial sweetener; found in candies, sweets and mint. It is hazardous
for dogs.

7. Bones from fish, poultry or other meat sources: They can cause obstruction or laceration of the digestive system.

8. Citrus oil extract: It can cause vomiting

9. Fat trimmings: They can cause pancreatitis.

10. Fish (raw, canned or cooked): If fed in a high amount it can cause vitamin B deficiency; leading to loss of appetite, seizures and in severe cases even death

11. Human supplements containing iron: They can damage the lining of the digestive system and be toxic to the other organs including the liver and kidneys.

12. Mushrooms: They affect multiple systems in the body; can cause shock and result in death.

13. Pits from peaches and plums: They can cause obstruction of the digestive tract.

14. Raw eggs: They contain enzyme called avidin, which decreases the absorption of biotin. This can lead to skin and hair coat problems.

15. Raw meat: It may contain bacteria such as salmonella and E.coli, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea.

16. Salt: Eating too much of salt can cause excessive thirst and urination and lead to sodium ion poisoning. Symptoms of high intake of salt include vomiting, diarrhea, depression, tremors, elevated body temperature and seizures. It may even cause death.

17. Sugary food and drinks: It causes obesity, dental problems such as tooth decay, joint problems diabetes; it is noted that obese dogs are at higher risk of diabetes. Excessive sweet food retards calcium metabolism and initiates skeletal problems including bone loss and arthritis.

18. Yeast dough: It can stretch dog's abdomen and cause severe pain.

19. Milk and milk products: They can cause diarrhea or other digestive upsets. Pets do not possess significant amount of lactase; the enzyme that breaks down lactose into milk.

Is There Any Benefit For Babies in Breast Feeding?

There is no question that breast milk beats infant formula as far as nutrition goes. All female mammals make milk, but the recipe, so to speak, is different from species to species. Human breast milk is the perfect food for baby humans, and cow's milk is the perfect food for baby cows.

In fact, human babies fed straight cow's milk tend to become quite ill. The proportion of nutrients is all wrong. To make cow's milk acceptable for human babies, it has to be processed to change the fat, protein, iron and salt content. The result is infant formula. Babies are able to digest formula well enough, but it is not the same as human milk.

Human milk contains just the right proportions of proteins, fats, sugars and salts that babies need. There are many other benefits as well like the following:

Protection against infection: Breast milk may help protect babies against some common infections that cause diarrhea and vomiting, as well as infections in the ear, nose, sinuses and lungs. It's not clear from the research how long a mother needs to breastfeed to pass on these health benefits, but, most likely, even breastfeeding for a short time offers at least some of these advantages. In fact, although longer is probably better, the very first weeks and months may be the most important at all.

Shield against food allergies: Exposure to allergens early in life is one of the main causes of allergies. Many infants develop allergies to the proteins in formula made from cow's milk or soya. But allergies to human milk are unheard of. Some researchers believe that babies who are exclusively breastfeed for six months or more may have lower rates of allergies to many other foods, as well.

The Baby is likely to be fit and not obese: Breastfed infants tend to be leaner than bottle-fed ones, particularly in the second half of the first year. Some experts believe that they have a lower risk of becoming obese later in life.

Lesser risk of Diabetes: According to some research studies, breastfed infants may have a lower risk of developing autoimmune diseases, which occur when the immune system attacks the body itself. Among these are juvenile-onset diabetes, multiple sclerosis and two serious diseases affecting the intestines, crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Don't get bothered by these medical terms, in simple words, your baby would be less likely to develop diabetes.

Smarter Baby: Several studies show that babies who were breastfed have higher IQs. But the scientific jury is still out as to whether or not the breast milk itself is the cause. Breast milk does contain substances that may be important for brain development; most formulas do not. The brain enhancing effects of break milk may be most important for premature infants who are at higher risk of later learning problems.

The 6 Benefits of Colon Cleansing

Many people suffer from health conditions such as constipation and diarrhea. Although these are quite common illnesses, not many people are aware that the prevention and treatment of these conditions are quite easy just by simply ensuring that you have a healthy colon. Some people see colon cleansing as an undesirable topic yet it is a very important part of maintaining colon health. There are a number of considerable health benefits to keeping your colon clean.

1. For starters, it helps reduce the occurrence of constipation. Constipation occurs when the muscular movements of the colon progress slowly or when there is insufficient water in your system. These cause stools to become hard and dry and thus wastes are prevented from quickly moving along the colon. Colon cleanse measures such as adding fiber to the diet or increasing water intake helps prevent constipation as waste is eliminated much more efficiently and stools are lubricated by the water that our body takes in.

2. Regular colon cleansing also prevents diarrhea. Diarrhea is characterized by overly moist, even watery stools. If diarrhea progresses, it can lead to dehydration which can be very dangerous especially for children and the elderly. Colon cleanse helps maintain the right consistency your waste.

3. Colon cleanses help in weight loss. Excessive weight can lead to a host of other serious illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease. When you go through a colon cleansing treatment, toxins and waste matter that have built up inside the body will be flushed out. It is said that this contributes to weight loss as colon cleanses can eliminate anywhere between four to ten pounds of waste matter.

4. Perhaps the most significant benefit of colon cleansing to your health is the prevention of colon cancer. If waste material is not eliminated efficiently this can lead to harmful bacteria and parasites breeding inside the body. These organisms are not supposed to live inside the body and will wreak havoc on the colon and potentially lead to cancer.

Toxins are dangerous materials that can build up inside our bodies. These are usually made up of preservatives and other harmful chemicals that will contribute to the deterioration of the colon.

5. Colon cleanse promotes regular and efficient bowel movement. This way harmful material is prevented from building up and causing our bodies harm. Colon cleansing also prevents mucus from accumulating in the inner lining of the colon. This is important as mucus prevents the absorption of nutrients that are essential to our health. Mucus also hinders the body from getting rid of fecal matter because it blocks the colon.

6. Other benefits that can be derived are:

a) Improved appearance. Clears up the skin and prevents the occurrence of acne.

b) Prevention of digestive problems. Reduces flatulence, stomach pains, gastritis, heartburn, bloating and acidity because your digestive system functions more efficiently.

c) Promotes vitality. Toxins cause our body to function slowly and once these are eliminated, our energy levels are heightened.

d) Better concentration.

e) Freedom from illnesses such as fatigue, headaches, muscle pains, hemorrhoids.

With the right combination of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, herbs, and more, you will be able to put off aging and disease for years to come.

Digestion, Colic, and the Bottle-Feeding Infant

While there is no evidence that bottle-fed infants have colic more often than their breast-fed counterparts, it may seem that your little one is fussier after his feeding times. The bottle feeding infant may have digestive issues or other problems with formula that breast-fed babies do not. Because if this it is highly important that you pay attention to your little one's feeding habits in order to establish whether or not he or she is having any difficulties in digesting formula. Some of the symptoms you may notice are:

  • Gassiness, or Bloating - if your baby is excessively gassy, or often seems bloated, here she may be having difficulty digesting the proteins and sugars in whatever formula is being offered. Talk with your pediatrician about making a change, or for further evaluation.

  • Excessive Spit-Up - excessive spit up can be assigned of acid reflux, or it can be something as simple as the need to burp your baby more often. However, if your baby regularly spits up after his feeding, digestive issues may be the problem.

  • Irregularity - diarrhea or constipation is of particular concern in infants because the toxicity of stools can quickly become a serious issue. Babies who suffer from diarrhea risk serious dehydration which is also dangerous and can be deadly. Seek the advice of your pediatrician if your baby is having any kind of irregular bowel symptoms.

  • Colic-Like Symptoms after Feeding - because colic often sounds as though a baby is in great pain, colic like symptoms after feeding may indicate painful gas, acid reflux, or other serious issues. If your baby is regularly very fussy just after being fed here she may be having an allergic reaction or some other issues that need to be addressed.

The bottle feeding infant is not necessarily more prone to these conditions than a breastfeeding infant. However, because of the wide variety of formulas available on the market, it is important to find one that will be easy for your baby to digest. Choosing hypoallergenic, vegetarian, or other formulas may help to alleviate the worst of the digestive symptoms that can be mistaken for colic.

If your baby is still fussy after making these adjustments, speak with your baby's doctor and get a formal diagnosis for colic after making sure other, more serious conditions have been ruled out. It is important to keep your baby's pediatrician fully aware of any changes you make to your baby's feeding routine or formula, so that he or she can make the best determination on how to help your little one thrive.

Symptoms of Worms in Dogs

Most of the commonly occurring health problems in dogs can be attributed to infection caused by worms. Five different kinds of worms are known to infect the dogs. They include the roundworms, tapeworms, hookworms, whipworms, and heartworms.

Although the symptoms produced by each worm type differ widely, there are certain symptoms that are common in all kinds of worm infections. Some of most commonly occurring signs and symptoms of worm infection in dogs include weight loss, appetite loss, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, bad breath, and dull coat.

If your dog is found dragging or rubbing his anus against the ground quite often, it is highly likely that it has been infected with worms.

Various symptoms that are specific to infection by a particular kind of worm are as follows:

Tapeworms: Weight loss, abdominal pain, itching, restlessness, and vomiting. Dried, broken segments of the worms can be seen in dog feces as small grains of rice.

Roundworms: Pot belly formation, diarrhea, sudden weight loss, and vomiting. They infect the intestines and can pass from the mother to the puppies via contaminated food, milk, soil, or blood.

Heartworms: Sudden increase in blood pressure, fainting spells, enlarged abdomen, general weakness, difficulty in breathing, and persistent cough. If ignored for a very long time, heartworm infection can lead to congestive heart failures.

Whipworms: Anemia, dehydration, lethargy, bloody stools, intestinal bleeding, and general weakness.

Hookworms: Coughing or wheezing, dryness of skin, abdominal cramps, weight loss, slimy/bloody stools, itching on feet, and diarrhea.

If you observe any of the aforementioned symptoms in your dog, take it immediately to a local vet for further examination so that the infection can be treated well in time, much before it gets worse.

Green Apple: Refreshing Taste, Uplifting Fragrance

"An apple a day keeps the doctor away"

A common fruit, the apple is perhaps underrated in its medicinal properties. Most regard it as just a healthy fruit or a dessert ingredient but are unaware of its other uses when it comes to aromatherapy.

History

With its history stretching back to the ages of time, the apple was rightly termed as King of Fruits before the Southeast Asian durian made its unique entrance. Apple had its origins in Southwest Asia between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. Findings show that lake dwellers in central Europe had used apple as far back as the Stone Age era.

Its offspring, the green apple, was successively cultivated in 1850 and is now grown in France at Loire Valley, Provence, Languedoc-Roussillon, Aquitaine and Midi-Pyrenees.

In the 2nd century, Galen, a famous physician to the emperors and gladiators, prescribed apple wine as a panacea for nearly all ailments.

Apple is also an affectionate reminiscence of our childhood years with "now White" giving it a magical symbolism. In fact, apples are also mentioned in three other Grimm's fairy tales, which are taken from old folklores.

Uncovering ancient therapy, we would see a concoction of apple pulp, swine's grease and rosewater being used to beautify the complexion and smoothen the skin. The juice of sour apple was used to remove warts.

Dr John Caius, physician to Queen Elizabeth, advised the patient to "smele to an old swete apple to recover his strength".

Ecology

Located in temperate regions at a substantial height above sea level, the apple tree is a small deciduous tree with a dense crown and gray bark. Its toothed, elliptical leaves grow with pink-flushed and white flowers on short side twigs. The apple tree blooms in spring and harvest would be ripe from September to April of the following year. The fruit is rounded and depressed at each end.

There are altogether 7000 kinds of apples throughout the world, with yellow, green, red or combination skin colours. Sweet-tasting apples are often directly consumed whilst sour-tasting ones are used for cooking, making wine or refining into essential oil. The green apple, which belongs more to the latter category, comes with a greenish radiant skin and juicy flesh that gives a refreshing taste with every bite. With its high-fibre contents and thirst-quenching properties, the apple proves to be a favourite among ladies.

Apples are cultivated across North America and brought into the prairies in eastern United States, South Canada and the Pacific states.

Health Notes

Apples contain malic and tartaric acids which neutralise indigestion, hence preventing constipation and diarrhea. A source of pectin, protein, calcium, carbohydrates, sodium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, zinc and iron, apples also help to purify blood, stop bleeding, clear gout and rheumatism, prevent gallstones, maintain cleanliness of the teeth, reduce cholesterol level and enhance memory. It is even described by the medical profession as a natural health food.

In the field of Chinese medicine, apples are devoid of toxins, promote the secretion of body fluids, quench thirst, nourish the lungs and gallbladder, eliminate worries, enhance stomach and spleen functions and have a sobering effect when one is drunk.

With its secretion of organic acid to regulate intestinal peristalsis, apples can boost appetite. Where beauty is concerned, apples have a rich source of vitamins A, B and C and have nourishing and whitening effects on the skin. Bel'Air uses distillation to extract the green apple fruit. As the extracted essential oil molecules are very small, they can be quickly absorbed by the body via aromatherapy. The fragrance of green apple, which is as refreshing as its taste, can then aid in digestive functions, boosting of appetite, etc. If you wish to alleviate intestinal problems, maintain muscular functions or just have a healthier complexion, do try Bel'Air green apple essential oil and experience the uplifting effects for yourself!

For sleepless nights, vexed emotions and digestive problems, Bel'Air green apple essential oil provides the ideal remedy.

Acne Medicine is Not As Effective As Changing Your Diet For Healing Acne

Acne medicines only treat the symptoms of acne. They do not remove the cause of acne. Acne is caused from toxins being eliminated through your skin. Some acne medicine can have very harsh side effects.

Are you willing to risk damaging your skin with these sometimes dangerous drugs?

The good news is that you can cure your acne by changing your diet like I have, without using any type of acne medicine at all. Years ago I tried using different types of acne medicines to try and fix my skin, but they didn't work.

At the time I believed it when I read that eating an unhealthy diet does not cause acne. I now know that eating foods that are not compatible with your genetics definitely causes acne. When you are on the proper non-allergenic diet, you will not need to buy any more expensive acne medicine.

Acne medicine will not change your genetics. Not all people are the same. Some people might digest certain foods well without causing acne. Other people might be slightly allergic to that same food, and it can cause them to break out with acne. Remember: people have different genetics and come from different parts of the world.

Trains planes and automobiles have mixed up the food supply of the world and made it possible for people to have almost any food from any part of the world available to them.

Just because you can eat a food without it instantly killing you, doesn't mean that it is the best food for you with your unique genetics. Every animal on the planet has its own species-specific diet.

If you want to fix your skin without using acne medicine, than you will have to stop eating the foods that are causing your acne in the first place. Also certain combinations of foods can react with each other and form substances that your body will react negatively to.

Remember back in high school in chemistry class? When we would mix a bunch of chemicals together? Sometimes they would have a dramatic chemical reaction, and turn into a totally different substance. Have you seen the Mentos and Diet Coke experiments on Youtube, where the combination of the two makes an explosive reaction and sprays soda way up into the air? If you haven't already, you should see it. Just Google it.

What do you think happens if you eat Mentos and Diet Coke at the same time? If you have gas pains, then you are probably eating the wrong combinations of foods at the same meal.

There are many other foods and food additives that people eat on a regular basis that are turning into toxic chemicals when mixed together, that the body then has to get rid of. If your body has to, it will just send the toxins strait through your skin for rapid elimination, and taking acne medicine is not going to stop the toxins from being eaten in the first place.

Acne medicines might seem to work sometimes because some of them will make your skin tougher, which in turn makes the skin less permeable, which makes it harder for the toxins to be eliminated through the skin.

But this is not the healthy way to get rid of acne symptoms. It can actually be worse for your health in the long run because it makes it harder for your body to get rid of these toxins, which can lead to a toxic overload in the body.

So, you might want to think twice before deciding to try and cure your acne with acne medicines, because they can actually make your acne worse in the long run. If you really want to cure your acne the healthy way, you must change your diet.

There is no way around it. However, there are many other benefits to going on a healthy diet other than just curing acne, so look at it as a win-win.

Many diseases are caused from not being on the proper diet. If you get on the proper diet now, you will not have to worry as much about developing a major health problem in the future.

Also, your taste-buds will adapt, and healthy foods will actually start to taste good. I know that junk food, and the typical American diet of fast food, artificial chemical flavorings, junk food, candy, and deserts taste good, but it just isn't worth all of the diseases that it causes.

Crohn's Disease - Staying in Remission As Long As You Can

I have been diagnosed with crohn's 6 years ago, struggling with everyday symptoms for 3 long years. I was not able to work properly, luckily my job could be carried out from the comfort of my home (I am an accountant).

Doctors kept telling me the disease runs its own course and nothing I will do will affect it in any way, but they were more than wrong. As I started experimenting with changing my diet and exercising, within a time of few months I went from a sad man with daily intestinal cramps and bloody diarrhea to a full functioning pain free 28 year old male.

What you do, your daily life really matters to how your crohn's disease will behave. Sometimes it is impossible to prevent a flare up, but at least you can decrease its severity and duration. Not only physical factors such as food can make your condition worse but also psychological. Stress is a great enemy as it can exacerbate your symptoms.

Therefore the first thing on the list would be to try to avoid stress. This can be difficult to achieve, but try to experiment with relaxation techniques such as meditation.

Another important thing is to avoid tobacco as it narrows blood vessels and influences intestinal motion. Although tobacco may reduce your stress levels, in the long run it does the opposite. Alcohol is another forbidden fruit as it irritates the intestines.

Avoiding everything harmful is not enough, you need to start absorbing everything healthy too. Various supplements and healthy foods can greatly improve your condition. Exercising won't harm you either as it helps to promote a good mood and keep a good overall health.

There are many more greater tips and techniques you may want to try, have a look at my resources for instance. I am currently in remission and haven't had a flare up in 2 years mainly thanks to how I altered my everyday life to cope with the disease.

Remember, the disease does not have to own you, but exactly the opposite. Once you gain control over it you will start to doubt even having it.

Diarrhea - Natural Home Remedies That You Ought to Know

Diarrhea can have many responsible reasons. Sometimes it can be a symptom of a more serious condition, other times it is caused by food poisoning, bacteria, abuse of food, alcohol or caffeine. Whatever its causes are, when affected by it, you probably need an effective home remedy for diarrhea that acts fast and provides relief. Sometimes diarrhea can also be accompanied by other symptoms like nausea, vomiting or cramps. It is the body's way to get rid of toxins, but it can also signalize a serious condition if stools come with blood or mucus.

Ginger is one of the well-known home remedies for diarrhea. Ginger juice should be mixed with boiling water and half a cup needs to be consumed hourly. Curd mixed with bananas or mango juice is also effective. Another way of ending diarrhea is to make a paste of lemon, without removing the seeds, add same salt to it and consume it a few times a day. If you are looking for fast relief, blend some red radish, put a cup of cold milk over them and also add half a teaspoon of cornstarch. After eating this mixture, diarrhea should stop in about an hour. If you consider it necessary, repeat this procedure after a few hours. It is also recommended to boil some rice until it is fully cooked and then to eat it. Don't throw away the water in which you have boiled the rice, but drink it. Grated papaya boiled in water and then consumed is also effective.

Other home remedies for diarrhea include a mixture of lemon juice, ginger juice and pepper. Take a table spoon once in a while. Charcoal is a very popular home remedy for diarrhea and it is also helpful in nausea and vomiting. It does a good job in absorbing the toxins from the body and it also detoxifies kidneys and liver. Four tablets of charcoal need to be administered every hour until diarrhea ends.

Patients with diarrhea should pay attention to the fact that this condition dehydrates the body and, along with the home remedies for diarrhea, they should also make sure to drink plenty of liquids. Water to which small amount of salt and sugar were added is recommended to be consumed to avoid dehydrating and to replace the lost fluids.

Most home remedies for diarrhea are efficient, but if the condition gets worse, the sufferer should see a physician in order to check if diarrhea is not the symptom of another disease.

Probiotics Use in Children

In today's medically savvy society, parents often seek "natural" remedies for health ailments, or to help their children feel better. They also reach for supplements in an attempt to improve health and seek "super foods" to promote wellness.

"Super foods," known as functional foods, describe foods or nutrients that promote health beyond providing nutrition. Probiotics are considered to be a functional food, and in the recent years they have received increased attention from the scientific and general communities.

The World Health Organization defines probiotics as live organisms, usually bacteria, that are used to change or re-establish the intestinal or gut flora and improve our health. In the early 20th century, a Russian scientist and Nobel laureate Eli Metchnikoff, PhD proposed that ingestion of certain bacteria, like those that come from fermented milk, had a beneficial impact on health. Today we have scientific evidence that certain bacteria, probiotics, play a beneficial role in certain diseases in adults and children. For example, there is compelling evidence that probiotics are effective in the treatment of viral and antibiotic induced diarrhea.

VIRAL DIARHHEA

Every year thousands of children become ill with gastroenteritis, or "the stomach flu." They experience a rapid onset of watery diarrhea with vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain, and fever. Research indicates that in the United States diarrhea is associated with 150,000 to 170,000 hospitalizations annually. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, scientists estimate that 1 out of 23-27 children will be hospitalized with diarrhea by age 5.

Recent scientific findings indicate that probiotics are extremely effective in preventing acute diarrhea in children. They are also effective when administered during the early stages of viral diarrhea.

DIARRHEA DUE TO ANTIBIOTIC TREATMENT

Antibiotic treatments often lead to the disruption of intestinal flora and cause diarrhea. Studies show that the administration of probiotics to children taking antibiotics reduces the risk of diarrhea.

So far, the research on probiotic use in the treatment of irritable bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), or eczema shows no benefit of probiotic use to prevent or alleviate symptoms.

SAFETY

Most probiotics have been used in foods like yogurt and kefir and have a long-standing history of safety. Therefore, they are considered safe for use by healthy people. Individuals with compromised immune systems, such as those with chronic diseases or undergoing chemotherapy, should not take probiotics, as there have been reports of probiotic-associated sepsis and endocarditis.

One thing to remember is that probiotics are not regulated by the FDA, thus over-the-counter products may vary widely in quality. Infant formula containing B. lactis is the only exception. The FDA considers it safe to use in infants.

The bottom line is that probiotics may be beneficial for certain diseases, but may prove harmful for certain individuals. Therefore, before considering a probiotic supplement, talk to your health care provider.

Guidelines for Effective Dietary Management of Fructose Malabsorption: The Low FODMAP Diet

Sensitivity to sugars like lactose, fructose and sorbitol are largely undiagnosed, but responsible for stomach bloating and intestinal distress to many. A group of indigestible carbohydrates or sugars, including oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols have been shown to be osmotically active, rapidly fermenting in the gastrointestinal tract. Various studies show that these sugars are considerable triggers of gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with fructose malabsorption and IBS individually or in combination.

The low FODMAP diet has dramatically improved the gastrointestinal health of many with fructose malabsorption and irritable bowel syndrome in clinical trials. FODMAPs represent the food types that are most prone to fermentation by the gut bacteria. Evidence suggests that reducing global intake of FODMAPs to manage functional gut symptoms provides symptom relief for about 75% of patients with FGDs such as irritable bowel syndrome. Functional gut symptoms vary from person to person. The treatment of functional gut disorders varies. Modification of meal size, alcohol, fat and caffeine plays a crucial role. Consumption of adequate amounts of fiber and plenty of fresh pure water often helps dramatically in controlling and maintaining healthy digestive health. Recognition of the side effects that go along with supplements and medications is a must. Lifestyle changes that benefit digestion including relaxation, exercise, proper sleep and sunlight are also important key elements in addition to administering the Low FODMAP diet.

This group of poorly absorbed, short-chain carbohydrates, known as the FODMAPs was developed by researchers from Australia, Dr Sue Shepherd and Professor Peter Gibson. They coined the term FODMAPs as a way to categorize an otherwise unrelated group of certain types of carbohydrates. The acronym FODMAPs stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides and Monosaccharides. It is used to define an otherwise unrelated group of short chain carbohydrate and sugar alcohols. The FODMAPs are fermented by the bacteria of the intestines leading to flatulence, pain, bloating, reflux, diarrhea and constipation.

By reduction of dietary FODMAPs it is evident that there is success in providing relief from these symptoms to the majority of individuals with fructose malabsorption and relief to some with irritable bowel syndrome. Fructose is only one of the many poorly absorbed, short-chain carbohydrates that cause the symptoms of fructose malabsorption. These are complex names for a collection of molecules found in food that are poorly absorbed by some people. When these molecules are poorly absorbed in the small intestine, they act as a food source to the bacteria in the digestive tract, causing high osmotic activity and rapid fermentation which then leads to luminal distension and the potential for subsequent symptom induction in those with less adaptable bowels or visceral hypersensitivity.

In the individual fermenting short-chain carbohydrates like fructose and lactose may be malabsorbed, polyols are generally poorly absorbed and fructans and galactans are always poorly absorbed in all individuals. Consuming foods high in FODMAPs results in increased volume of liquid and gas in the small and large intestine, resulting in distention and symptoms such as abdominal pain and gas and bloating.

Those with fructose malabsoption show great improvement by being on the Low FODMAP diet. Many people experience a greater quality of life from being on this diet. This diet does require several dietary changes. Before starting, you should consult a registered nutritionist or dietitian to help ensure you are getting the appropriate nutrition including fiber. It is also important and relevant to understand that FM can co-exist with intolerance to other food chemicals including additives, salicylates, amines, lactose or gluten so it is important to pay attention to these if you still are experiencing symptoms when following the diet. Studies are still being conducted (currently at Monash University in Australia) on foods within the FODMAP diet. This diet is still in its infancy. New research will be revealed as time moves forward and more testing is done.

It is up to the patient to find there own personal tolerance level to specific foods, if they can tolerate them at all. The Low FODMAP diet acts as a guide to do just that. Until now there has been no such guide. Until now fructose malabsorption patients and IBS patients have been somewhat blindly learning what they can eat and what they cannot. Most foods do not have an immediate effect on the patient, meaning the symptoms may not show up until days later. It can be very difficult to know what is actually causing your symptoms. Symptoms can begin days later and end days later. The cycle consistently overriding itself means that patients can always be experiencing symptoms. The accumulative effect that the FODMAPs have and also the chemistry between them is a critical factor. You are a walking science lab. It will take some time to figure out your own personal meal plan. Many see improvement within the first week. Also you want to buy a notebook for a food journal. Record everything; every meal, every drink, any medications, anything consumed and of course the times. You also want to record your symptoms and those times as well too. This will help you identify a pattern.

The dietary advice for the reduction of fermentation of carbohydrates in the bowel is different for each person. By reducing the quantity of fermenting carbohydrates you will reduce symptoms. Small amounts of these carbohydrates will often be tolerated in some cases. In others total avoidance of a particular food, such as onions, is a must for symptoms to improve. It is important to understand that eating foods with varying FODMAP values at the same time will add up, resulting in symptoms that you might not experience if you ate the food in isolation. For example, fruits that contain excess fructose combined with naturally occurring polyols, such as apples and pears, will likely contribute to more severe symptoms, as the excess fructose and polyols content contributes to the total FODMAP load. The FODMAP's: Fructose, Fructans, Lactose, Polyols (sorbitol & artificial sweeteners) and Galactans e.g. raffinose.

Fructose: This is a single sugar found often referred to as the "fruit sugar". lt is in fruit, many vegetables along with many other foods. Fructose is a common additive in many commercial and processed products.

Lactose: This is a sugar that is in most milk and dairy products. As FODMAPs have a collective impact on GI symptoms, limiting lactose consumption is best. Hydrogen breath testing can be done. Many fructmals are lactose intolerant as it is the most common intolerance among the population. If you are unsure it is best to also avoid Lactose. Lactose intolerance contributes to abdominal bloating, pain, gas, and diarrhea, often occurring 30 minutes to two hours following the consumption of milk and milk products. Lactose intolerance is the inability to metabolize lactose, because of a lack of the required enzyme lactase in the digestive system. It is estimated that 75% of adults worldwide show some decrease in lactase activity during adulthood. Tolerance to lactose varies and dietary control of lactose intolerance is dependent upon unique tolerance levels. Lactose is present in two large food categories: conventional dairy products, and as a food additive (in dairy and non dairy products). Lactose (also present when labels state lactoserum, whey, milk solids, modified milk ingredients, etc.) is a commercial food additive used for its flavor, texture and adhesive qualities. It is found in foods such as processed meats.

Fructans: Fructans are long chains of fructose molecules 'stuck together' with a glucose molecule at the end (polymerized fructose chain with a terminal glucose). The main dietary sources of fructans include wheat and some vegetables such as onion. They may also be called inulin or Fructo-Oligosaccarides(FOS). Fructans are food for bacteria in the digestive tract. This causes the symptoms of fructose malabsorption and no amount of glucose will help to absorb these chains of fructose any easier. Fructans should be strictly limited.

Polyols: Polyols are also known as sugar alcohols. They have no calories and do not break down in the body or digest at all. Most are too large for simple diffusion from the small intestine, creating a laxative effect on the GI tract. These include sugar alcohols that are given names such as sorbitol, mannitol, maltitol, xylitot & isomalt. Excess consumption might have a laxative effect. If all you had to eat for three days was without any fructose at all you most likely would not experience any symptoms from polyols. This is however very difficult to do. Even fructose balanced with glucose will initiate the chemical reaction that polyols have within the body. Polyols also occur naturally in some fruits and vegetables. They are often used as an artificial sweetener and added as sweeteners to sugar-free gums, mints, cough drops, and medications. Polyols actually cause fructose malabsorption when digestion is normally healthy. In individuals who already have fructose malabsorption polyols cause FM symptoms to be much worse. This is because polyols make it even more difficult to absorb fructose. Limiting polyols or removing them all together is advised. Some fruits and vegetables with polyols can be consumed with an individual tolerance for different individuals. Avocados are one example. Apples, apricots, cherries, nectarines, pears, plums, prunes and mushrooms also have polyols.

Galactans: Galactans are oligosaccharides containing chains of the sugar galactose that end in a fructose and a glucose. The human body lacks the enzymes to hydrolyze them into digestible components, so they are completely contributing to gas and GI distress. Raffinose and stachyose are examples of galactans. These are found in legumes (baked beans, lentils, chickpeas) and some vegetables including peas and onions.

The Low FODMAP Diet: Dietary management of fructose malabsorption.
1. Avoidance of foods with high levels of free fructose and "short-chain fructans".
2. Limited total fructose load.
3. Recommendation of foods with balanced fructose/glucose levels.
4. Intake of free glucose.
5. 8 - 10 weeks on the Low FODMAP diet. If improvement takes place begin to challenge separate components one at a time. Establish tolerance level that is personal to you. Remember that FODMAP's have an accumulative effect in your body. It is suggested that you seek the guidance of a dietician to ensure you are getting the appropriate nutrition and fiber requirements.

High Fructose Foods: High fructose foods that have a higher fructose percentage than glucose percentage can cause many negative reactions to those with fructose malabsorption. They should be avoided or strictly limited. Consumption of free glucose will help absorb excess fructose but there is still a limit as to how much fructose the small intestine can handle. Fructose is generally only a problem when there is more fructose than glucose present or too much fructose is eaten at once, such as eating two or three pieces of fruit in one sitting. Some high fructose foods are:

  • Honey

  • Apples (all varieties)

  • Pears

  • Dried fruit

  • Fruit juice

  • Coconut in any form

  • Peaches

  • Honeydew melon

  • High fructose corn syrup

  • Watermelon

  • Star fruit

  • Lychee

  • Nashi fruit

  • Canned fruit

  • Corn syrup

Foods Containing Fructans:

  • Wheat (in large amounts) Unlike celiac disease trace amounts of wheat are okay and well tolerated usually with FM.

  • Rye (in large amounts)

  • Onions (all varieties) Onion is a MAJOR problem, even when eaten in small amounts.

  • Brown rice: Many report having difficulty with brown rice. It may be suitable in small amounts.

  • Leeks

  • Zucchini

  • Chicory

  • Inulin (artificial fiber added to foods etc. Check labels.)

  • Artichokes

  • Fructo-oligo saccharides (FOS) (artificial fiber added to some foods)

  • Dandelion tea

Foods Containing Sorbitol:

  • Artificially sweetened gum, candy and soft drinks

  • Artificial sweeteners: Sorbitol, Mannitol. Xylitol, Isomalt

  • Apples

  • Apricots

  • Peaches

  • Apricots

  • Nectarines

  • Pears

  • Cherries

Foods Containing Raffinose:

  • Cabbage

  • Brussel sprouts

  • Baked beans

  • Asparagus

  • Red kidney beans, Green beans

  • Legumes

  • Lentils

  • Chickpeas

Most dairy foods have lactose, some more than others. The following are on the higher end of the spectrum.

Foods Containing High Levels of Lactose:

  • Ice cream

  • Milk

  • Condensed milk

  • Soft cheeses

Legionnaires' Disease - Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

Legionnaires' disease is a severe form of pneumonia caused by a bacterium known as legionella. Common symptoms include high fever, chills, body pain, cough, hemoptysis, breathlessness, chest pain, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, confusion and other mental illnesses. This disease may rarely cause infections in wounds and in other parts of the body including the heart. Old age; a history of smoking; the presence of chronic disorders like lung disease, diabetes, kidney disease or cancer; a weakened immune system; and having a job related to air conditioning systems-maintenance, are risk factors for this condition.

The Ayurvedic treatment of Legionnaires' disease is aimed at treating the basic infection and preventing complications like respiratory failure, kidney failure and septic shock. Medicines like Shwas-Kuthar-Ras, Tribhuvan-Kirti-Ras, Maha-Sudarshan-Churna, Sitopaladi-Churna, Talisadi-Churna, Ras-Sindur, Malla-Sindur, Sameer-Pannag-Ras, Abhrak-Bhasma, Shrung-Bhasma, Pushkarmool (Inula racemosa), Kantakari (Solanum xanthocarpum), Kushtha (Saussurea lappa), Kulingan (Alpimia galangal), Som (Ephedra vulgaris), Karkatashrungi (Pistichia integerima), Yashtimadhuk (Glycerrhiza glabra) and Vasa (Adhatoda vasaka) are used to treat fever and lung infection.

Medicines like Vasa, Naagkeshar (Messua ferrea), Laxa (Purified wax) and Sphatik-Bhasma are used to prevent hemoptysis. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea can be treated using medicines like Laghu-Sutshekhar, Praval-Panchamrut, Sutshekhar-Ras, Shankh-Vati, Kutaj-Ghan-Vati and Panchamrut-Parpati. Confusion and mental changes can be prevented using medicines like Mandukparni (Centella asiatica), Vacha (Acorus calamus), Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) and Bruhat-Vat-Chintamani. Respiratory failure and septic shock can be treated using medicines like Laxmi-Vilas-Ras, Shrung-Bhasma, Maha-Laxmi-Vilas-Ras, Abhrak-Bhasma, Arjun (Terminalia arjuna) and Makardhwaj-Ras. Kidney failure can be treated using medicines like Punarnavadi-Guggulu, Gokshuradi-Guggulu, Saarivadi-Churna, Gomutra-Haritaki and Chandraprabha-Vati.

Legionnaires' disease may be fatal, especially in the presence of a weakened immune system. Prompt and aggressive hospital treatment is therefore very important in the management of this condition. Ayurvedic medicines may be given as additional therapy to improve the therapeutic response and prevent complications. It is equally important to prevent outbreaks of Legionnaires' disease by meticulous cleaning and disinfection of water systems, pools and spas.

Guinea Pig Ailments You Should to Be Aware Of

There are certain guinea pig ailments you need to be aware of for the health of your pet.

Pneumonia

Cavies (guinea pigs) are susceptible to respiratory infections including pneumonia brought on by bacteria. Signs are difficulty breathing, wheezing, tiredness, and discharge from the nose or eyes.

Rabbits carry the pneumonia causing bacteria as part of their normal bacteria and it will spread to the cavy making him sick if they are in close proximity so need to be separated. When the animal of one species gets germs from another species the illness is far worse then it is for the host species. Like when humans get bird flu or swine flu. If you suspect pneumonia bring him to the vet for treatment with antibiotics.

A Sluggish Cavy

If your cavy is sluggish or has stiff or swollen joints with a resulting reluctance to moving around he could have a vitamin C deficiency. There gums can bleed easily without cause. Humans and cavies, unlike most mammals, are unable to produce their own vitamin C so must rely on outside sources for it like foods high in vitamin C content. If we don't get enough scurvy will develop in which case we just eat some oranges or take some vitamin C. It is supposed to be in any pellets you feed your cavy but you should also feed him foods high in vitamin C. Scurvy can be lethal to a cavy but it is easily reversible and should you suspect it you need to take him to your vet for treatment.

Vitamin C can deteriorate if exposed to the elements like being left in the direct sunlight or prolonged heat. If you feed your cavy pellets containing vitamin C you store them in a dark and cool place to prevent deterioration.

Lice

If your cavy is excessively scratching or he's very sensitive to your touch and even aggressive about it cause it hurts him this could be signs of lice. You can comb through the hair. Lice can be spotted by looking for small flat brown bugs that attach to the hair. The eggs are also attached to the hair. Running lice on the other hand can be seen moving through the hair. It's difficult for your pet to get this unless he is in contact with another cavy that has lice. And don't worry they aren't transferrable to humans so you can handle your pet. Treatment us usually bathing him with a medicated shampoo which you get from the vet.

Intestinal Infections

This can bring on a fast death without warning or be a lengthy process with tiredness, weight loss and maybe diarrhea. Antibiotics are usually used. The infection can be brought on by bacteria being introduced to the intestinal tract by way of contaminated water or greens and vegetables.

Mange

Mange is a parasite that will cause hair loss in large clumps on his back along with skin irritation. With hair loss of course you bring it to the vet.

Sneezing

Guinea pigs can have allergies and sneezing could indicate an allergy to something. What's usually recommended is to change his bedding to a complete brand new set. Or if that doesn't work you can experiment with moving the cage to a different location. Hay or straw dust can also cause sneezing. Cavies do sneeze occasionally which is normal and kind of cute actually. Straw dust can also get in their eyes causing excessive blinking or watery eyes and even a corneal ulcer. Find out from your vet how to wash out their eyes.

As you can see above most guinea pig ailments can be successfully treated.

Psoriasis And Parasites - Is There A Connection?

First off, parasites are a fact of life since the beginning of mankind. That is how I made the connection between Psoriasis of biblical times and today, and more so since WWII because of the amplitude of processed foods (when govt. made it easier and cheaper for families to feed themselves).

As I once said, your intestines provide the perfect breeding ground for parasites, who enjoy making their little homes nestled within impacted waste as well as in the linings of your colon walls.

WHAT ARE PARASITES? PLEASE, I KNOW THIS IS NOT PLEASANT TO READ BUT IT'S A MUST IF YOU WANT TO CURE YOURSELF OF PSORIASIS in my opinion.

Following tons of research, parasites primarily consist of three major groups; simple-cell organism, roundworms, and tapeworms.

The ones that are common to North America, range from microscopic protozoans and Cyclospora cayetanensis - sometimes called the yuppie disease because of US outbreaks resulting from fecally - contaminated imported raspberries - to macroscopic multi-cellular worms and nematodes such as hookworms, pinworms, and whipworms.

THEY ARE INVISIBLE TO THE NAKED EYE.

While they are fond of the colon, they can be found in just about any part of your body, especially the liver.

There are more than 100 different types of parasites who enjoy living inside human beings, and to this day, it's still impossible to identify every kind of parasites. It would be too costly. These parasites existed many thousands of years ago, just as they exist today. Do you begin to see a connection between Psoriasis of today and Psoriasis of yesteryears.? Let's keep going.

Although you can be infected without symptoms, I thought I'd let you know some of the more common symptoms:

Allergies to many different types of foods, anemia (low red blood count), bloating, abdominal swelling, bloody stools, bouts of diarrhea, inconsistent bowel habits, flu-like symptoms (coughing, wheezing, fever), foul-smelling stools, itching around the anus (especially at night) nausea, vomiting, weight loss.

These are just some of the symptoms. HERE IS THE OTHER CONNECTION of Psoriasis some 2000 years plus ago and today. How Are They Transmitted?

I'll cut this part short just so that you understand with a little more emphasis on one way. You'll recognize it. Some are air-borne viruses, bacteria, and fungi. They are inhaled. Some parasite diseases (noticed they are not named) are associated with bat dung (used in fertilizers), dust, and rodent feces.

Except for the fertilizers, the rest all existed in biblical times. Pets and other animals, such as beef and swine. Cats, dogs, and blood sucking insects. They existed as well. But here comes the most two common ways; Drinking Water and Food.

Drinking water then and now, becomes contaminated with fecal material from infected persons. This can be found in both running streams and tap water in many large North American cities served by surface water treatment plants. Drinking water always existed, more infected then by fecal matter in the streams obviously. But, one of the most common ways of contracting a parasite infection, and remember, according to the experts it is unavoidable, is through food intake.

Unless properly washed, vegetables grown on farms fertilized with infected human waste can transmit the egg of various parasites. Food then, was just as infected as it is today. Probably more so, but what makes the difference as to why Psoriasis is more rampant today is, the sheer volume of population and demand. I could go on, and on, and on. But I think you get the point.

Oh, I wanted to touch on the age groups affected, but this would be much too long. Take my word that it began to increase dramatically after the Second World War. All those born between 1945 and 1965 are the most affected.

NOW HERE IS MY LAST QUERY TO YOU. Seeing that you were probably never told to clean out your system, can you assume that you are infested? You're damn right you are. Don't you think it would be wise to do a colon cleanse to clean out your parasite infested colon? And, don't you think that it would be wise that your colon cleanse be followed by a liver cleanse? Absolutely if you want to cure Psoriasis, then and now!

Actually, since I was never told by my dermatologist, or any doctor, or my parents for that matter to clean out my colon, I had to research hard on this and come to my own conclusions about Psoriasis which is now supported by many experts. Psoriasis and probably most all diseases are caused by parasites, some known and many more unknown.

I hope all of the above has really sunken in for Psoriasis sufferers...

Dwarf Hamster Illnesses (Part Two)

A common and more serious hamster illness is the Wet Tail. This disease is a bacterial disease which will make your dwarf hamster very sick. Although it is more common in Syrian hamsters but it can affect the dwarf hamster also. This sickness is highly infectious and may cause death within a few days. Wet tail is usually caused by weaning, stress, dirty cages, overcrowding, environmental changes, and malnutrition.

A wet tail is exactly what the name implies. The hamster actually has a wet tail from excessive diarrhea, (a sticky jelly-like fluid). Other symptoms are loss of appetite, ears laying down, dirty appearance, bad temper and may become lethargic. In severe cases the rectal becomes prolapsed. You must see your veterinarian, for any hope of survival for your dwarf hamster or death will follow within a few days.

After taking your sick hamster to the vet you must do the following when your vet confirms the diagnosis keep your dwarf hamster away from the rest of any other hamsters you have. In fact separate each individual hamster from each other in different cages and keeping them far apart. Then disinfect everything in your hamster's cage including the water bottle, food bowls, toys, wheel and any other items that the hamster has been in contact with. Make sure you use an anti-bacterial soap on your hands too. Put clean bedding down every day until your dwarf hamster is well. In the event that the sick hamster does not make it then get rid of anything that cannot be disinfected.

Just like humans the dwarf hamster can get a cold. You can spread a cold or the flu to your hamster, so if you are ill do not play with or pick up the hamster. Another reason your fury friend may get a cold is from a drafty room, so make sure you place the cage in the correct environment for your pet. The symptoms of a cold or flu are: a runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing, and a fever. During this period keep the little one warm and follow up with a vet visit so that the illness can be treated properly before a more serious problem arises or even death.

Diarrhea and constipation are some other dwarf hamster illnesses. These illnesses need to be seen by a veterinarian also, if you can not get them under control within a few days. These too can be deadly. Diarrhea is commonly from eating too many fruits and vegetables, a dietary change or stress. Remove all fruits and vegetables and give dry grains. Constipation you will see very few droppings from lack of water or poor diet. Add some fresh fruits and vegetables to the hamster's diet. As with any other illnesses see your veterinarian if the problem worsens or does not improve. Always with dwarf hamster illnesses consult a veterinarian, he or she will help you in getting your sick hamster well again.

Poppy Seeds Or Kash Kash Are White in Pakistan

I hadn't realized that poppy seeds come in different shades; I always thought they were black, as they are in breads in Europe, so I was surprised to be told that the small grains of sand I was looking at were in fact, seeds from the poppy plant. Then I was shown different coloured seeds, some dark-blue, and some more of a yellow than white.?Because bread as we know it is not popular, or common in Pakistan, there is no bread with poppy seeds. The typical roti (or chapattis) are plain, as are the naan type breads, although some naan are like pizzas, and topped with potato paste or gram flour paste with slices of tomato and hot green chillies. Only paratha are stuffed with vegetables such as grated mooli, and these are eaten at weekends for breakfast, when people aren't in a hurry to go to work. Nowadays, where I live in Rawalpindi, very few people bother to cook roti, as they are subsidized by the provincial government, and sell at only 2 rupees per roti. Given the amount of time and effort it takes to cook roti, it's much easier to buy them from the local tandoor ready made.

The Latin name for the poppy, Papavar somniferum (the poppy of sleep) always reminds me of the scene in the "Wizard of Oz" when Dorothy and her companions succumb to the somniferous effects of the flowers and fall asleep in a field of poppies.

The ancient Greeks associated the poppy with the minor god Hypnos, the god of sleep, so I guess the opium obtained from the poppy was associated with his twin brother, Morpheus, the god of dreams. Before I came to Pakistan, I thought poppies would still be cultivated, but I haven't seen any poppy fields and there doesn't seem to be a social problem involving the use of morphine, although heroin is a different matter. Poppy seeds contain little if any trace of narcotics, despite the fact that the plant they come from is the same one that provides us with codeine and morphine.??

Traditionally poppy seeds are used in medicine on the Indian subcontinent. They are cooked with green cardamoms and sugar to treat diarrhea, and extract from the poppy plant are used to reduce fevers, help with liver complaints and treat TB.

In Pakistan poppy seeds, or Kash-Kash as they are called, are used ground to thicken sauces and in refreshing drinks. They are also sometimes added to rice dishes to give a different flavour. One of the popular drinks is Serdai, which can be made with milk or water.??

SERDAI

Ingredients

1 litre milk or water

30 gr blanched almonds

50 gr poppy seeds

4 green cardamoms, seeds removed and husks discarded

6 black peppercorns

Put the black peppercorns, sugar and milk or water into a pan and bring to the boil. Remove from the heat, put all the ingredients except ice in it and leave to cool.

Serve chilled, with ice.

Can Your Romance Survive Nursing School?

Are you ready for nursing school? Nursing school is one of the most difficult courses of study to go through. The two pathways to becoming a Registered Nurse-RN-are through a four-year university bachelors program or a two-year associate's degree. If the student's goal is to obtain a masters or become a nurse practitioner, it is best to enroll in a four-year program. The four-year program includes additional science and nursing management courses that a two-year associates program does not require. For those who may think they are saving money by going through an associate program, they are not. After a person graduates from a two-year college and continues on to obtain a bachelors, it will cost on the average of $15,000.00 dollars. This article will focus on the associate program aspect of nursing school.

Nursing is a calling and if you have chosen nursing because it is steady work and a steady paycheck, that is the wrong reasons to go into nursing. Nursing also means you will handling urine, bloody secretions, stool or "poop", and will be exposed to sickening odors. For example if you get sick at any of the following-you need to rethink if nursing is for you.

Injecting a 1 inch intramuscular needle with 4 mL of medication into the ventrogluteal site
Removing an IV from a patient who is on heparin and the blood keeps soaking through the pressure gauze
The sight of seeing 4th degree necrotic pressures sores that expose deep muscle and bone and the resulting rotting flesh odors that will turn your stomach
Handling blood tinged sputum from patients with chronic lung diseases
Performing sterile dressing changes requiring packing fresh ostomy wounds
Pouring bloody drainage out of Jackson-Pratt and Hemovac surgery drains into measuring cylinders
Getting a stool sample from smelly diarrhea
Cleaning tarry, sticky fecal matter off an elderly bed bound patient who has had a bowel movement in bed.

If a person is accepted into a nursing program, it will become a full-time job. The student will spend on the average of 30 to 40 hours of week in school, clinical's and studying. If a future nursing student still thinks they will be able to continue working a 40 hour a week job and take care of family in additional to school, they will end up physically and mental burned out and sick. The average medical surgical nursing textbook is 2 1/2 inches thick, has about 1900 pages and small print. The student will be reading on the average of about 120 pages every four weeks, plus will have reading from other nursing books and homework. The reading and homework is time-consuming because of the difficultly of the material.

Another aspect of nursing school is the student needs to evaluate their current romantic relationship. Divorces and relationship break ups are common with nursing school students. A student's romantic relationship needs to be based on a solid foundation and able to adapt to the change that nursing school creates in order to survive. As a nursing student goes through a nursing program, they evolve into a more assured, assertive and independent person. The student will learn and utilize critical thinking, become a patient advocate and will develop a voice and tell it like it is. If the student is married, engaged or involved with a needy and insecure significant other-SO, the relationship will in all likely hood not last.

A needy and insecure person who needs a lot of attention will feel threatened by the amount of time required for school, clinical's and studying along with the students personality change. The nursing student may be faced with the SO cheating on them, leaving them for another person, demanding the student quit or sabotaging the student's educational process with threats and passive aggressive behaviors. For example, the SO says things to shame you into looking like a selfish parent who is neglecting the children and the SO. The SO may even go as far as using the children as ploys in convincing the student's family and in-laws that the student needs to quit school and devote their time and life to being a loving spouse and good parent.

Another aspect of nursing is that bullying and horizontal hostility is common in the hospital workplace and it starts in nursing school. For more information read Kathleen Bartholomew's book-Ending Nurse to Nurse Hostility; Why Nurses Eat Their Young. There are those nursing instructors in the classroom and in the clinical setting, who humiliate and demoralize the student in front of others and the patients. These instructors tend to get away with their bullying year after year because depending upon the nursing school, the department protects them. The bully instructor knows this, and has their clever and subtle methods to make it clear that the student is expected to sit down, shut up, and do not question what is taught and do not complain, or they will find a way to fail you. As a result nursing students are intimidated to keep quiet and the bullying continues. The following are a few examples of what the author of this article has heard in the classroom and clinical setting:

Do you know how unintelligible you sound?
I am not going to answer that question, you need to critically think.
I am so tired of this shit, do you know how frustrating you are making me.
You need to let me know what you're other clinical instructors have said about your performance so I can help you improve.
Are you telling me that your other clinical instructors never said you were this nervous and incompetent? I don't think you're telling me the truth.
If you would listen better than you would have gotten a better score on the test.
That is stupid question; even your classmates are rolling their eyes.
I know more than all of you-so don't even think about lying to me.
Whatever your problem is, mine is ten times worse, so I don't need to hear about it!
I will make sure you never work in this hospital, you have made me (the instructor) look so bad this rotation.
Nursing is not for cry babies, and if you complain to your floor manager, you will find yourself out of a job.

A new nursing school graduate's first job will likely be on a hospital critical care unit taking care of anywhere from 4 to 6 patients. If the hospital has a Magnet rating, the new nurse will probably have no more than four patients. During the orientation period, the preceptor may be great or be a bully who ignores and or puts down the new hire regardless of how well they perform. If the new hire should complain to the floor manager, the bully and his or her cronies may retaliate. If a new hire does end up in a job where the coworkers do get along, consider it a blessing.

Many times, the first year of a nursing job is the hardest as it can take that long to become accustom to the hectic work load. Some new nurses have no problem adjusting and others do. The first year is where the new nurse decides if they are going to stay with nursing or leave. That is one of the reasons there is a high turnover, and nursing shortage. The stress alone can cause a new nurse to turn to alcohol and drugs for the first time in their lives. Unlike being in nursing school where the student has the protection of a clinical instructor, in the workplace a nurse is on their own and responsible for everything that happens in their patient care. And if the nurse is working three to four straight 12 hour shifts and is tired, mistakes start to happen. And depending upon the mistakes it can cost a new hire their job or land them in a lawsuit. This is why new hires need to have their own malpractice insurance. The rumor about if the nurse has their own malpractice insurance the more likely they will get sued is not true. If the nursing student can survive schooling and the first year on the job, they should have a good career. Remember, nursing is a calling and when called the nurse has to perform and excel.

The 8 Most Common Allergies

It seems that almost everyone we meet suffers from an allergy of some kind or knows of someone who does...perhaps it is because of the amount of chemicals we use in this modern era...perhaps it is that modern conveniences such as air conditioning or fans can more efficiently distribute the harmful allergens throughout our society.

It is possible for almost anything to cause an allergic reaction but there are some allergies that are more common than others. These are explained in more detail below.

1. Asthma

Asthma is a serious respiratory disease. This allergic inflammation of the lungs is characterized by wheezing, coughing and tightness around the chest, making it difficult to breathe. It can be brought about through environmental allergens, dust mites, pollen, animal dander, smoke and other pollutants.

2. Allergic Rhinitis (hay fever)

Like asthma, allergic rhinitis or hay fever is caused by airborne allergens such as dust or pollen. It is characterized by watery, itchy eyes and a runny nose. It also causes bouts of sneezing and coughing. This is caused by the person breathing in floating pollen which then sticks to the mucous membranes of the throat and nose. They can also land on the sensitive covering of the eyes.

3. Perennial Rhinitis (dust mite allergy)

Perennial rhinitis is a condition which affects the sufferer all of the time. It is usually caused by the microscopic droppings of the house dust mite which is breathed in, affecting the air spaces in the nose, thus producing excess mucous. It can also be caused by animal fur.

4. Eczema and Dermatitis

With skin allergies such as eczema and dermatitis, the skin becomes red and itchy and can sometimes become 'weepy'. Any part of the body can be affected. The cause of this type of allergy varies from dust to pollen to chemicals. It can also be triggered by heat, cold, humidity and bright sunlight.

5. Urticaria and Hives

Urticaria presents itself as raised lumps or as white patches with reddened skin surrounding them. They are extremely itchy and can come and go from all areas of the body. In most cases, urticaria will subside after a few hours but it can last for several days, causing extreme distress to the sufferer. This type of allergy is typically from a chemical substance such as cleaning products, hair dyes, and other chemical matter.

6. Food Allergies

A large number of people are allergic to certain foods, bringing on bouts of stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, wheezing, stuffy nose, and a rash. The foods responsible are mainly berries, shellfish, eggs, nuts, milk, corn, beans or wheat. For people who suffer food allergies, it is necessary to avoid not only these specific foods, but any other product made with these ingredients.

7. Poison or Venom Allergies (such as wasp or bee stings)

The allergic reaction to venom of insects usually presents itself in the form of hives or urticaria, tightness in the throat and chest, and itchy eyes. The person who suffers this type of allergy experiences more pain from a sting than someone without an allergy. Other creatures that can cause an allergy include ants, mosquitoes, jellyfish and scorpions.

8. Allergies to Drugs or Medications

Penicillin and Aspirin are the most common drugs to which some people have an allergic reaction and this generally causes a rash or hives.

In most cases, an allergic reaction is uncomfortable and can indeed be quite stressful. It is usually not fatal and will generally respond favourably to a treatment of antihistamines, corticosteroids or inhalants.

However, in some cases, the reaction is so severe, it can lead to a potentially life-threatening condition called anaphylactic shock. This is a condition in which a person is exposed to something to which he is extremely hypersensitive. This results in a release of histamine into the body tissues, sending the individual into anaphylactic shock.

Its onset is immediate and the symptoms include severe difficulty in breathing, swelling, a drop in blood pressure, and heart failure. The result will be fatal if the person is not treated urgently by the injection of adrenaline.

If the person has severe reactions, it is essential that they wear a medic alert bracelet so that those treating him are aware of the situation and can respond accordingly.

Most allergies can be controlled by avoiding the allergen if known. However, in some cases, it is unknown and this can be difficult. This can be overcome by always carrying antihistamines with you in case you have an allergic reaction to something.

If you manage your allergies sensibly, your discomfort should be minimized and you should be able to live a full and active lifestyle.

The most common ailments among babies are diarrhea, skin rashes, cold and fever. Diarrhea can lead to dehydration of the baby which is very harmful and very dangerous. Cushing's Disease in Dogs and Diarrhea - Side Effects of Medication

There are a lot of problems associated with cushing's disease in dogs. That includes problems for both the pet and the owner. If your dog has cushing's, he or she may have several symptoms that affect the quality of their life and, in extreme cases, can even kill them. As an owner, it can be frustrating to see your dog in that condition, especially if you don't know what is causing it, which is the case for most owners.

The reason that many owners don't know that their dog has cushing's is that the symptoms can be very similar to a lot of other medical conditions, or just to old age itself. Some of the signs of cushing's disease in dogs that can seem like they are signs of something else include drinking much more water than usual, frequent urination, diarrhea and vomiting.

There is, however, one sign of cushing's disease that many owners and vets do pick up on. As a dog owner, if your dog seems to be losing fur, it could be a sign that he or she has cushing's. That means abnormal amounts of fur loss, not just normal shedding. Of course, many owners don't realize that that could be a sign of cushing's, but they do realize that they should take their furry friend to the vet and the vet can, in turn, diagnose the problem.

The cause of cushing's disease in dogs is high levels of cortisol in the dog's blood. The adrenal and pituitary glands in the dog control cortisol production. So, cushing's is usually caused by tumors in one of those glands. The treatment for those tumors is usually either surgery or drugs, called immunosuppressants. In fact, often, the treatment involves both surgery and medication.

The strange thing about diarrhea, especially, as a symptom of cushing's disease in dogs, is that diarrhea actually indicates low levels of cortisol in the blood, not high. Since cushing's causes high levels of cortisol, that may seem odd. The medication for cushing's, though, can over-regulate cortisol production and cause an imbalance in the opposite direction. So, if your dog has cushing's, your dog's vet may also recommend that you keep cortisol supplements on hand for your pet.

You should also understand that conventional medication for cushing's is going to take a while for your dog's vet to dose properly for your furry friend. There are standard dosages for certain breeds or sizes of dog, but no two dogs are exactly alike. Depending on your dog's weight, age and other health conditions, for example, they may need a different dosage. So, during the adjustment phase, you should be prepared for the dog's cortisol levels to be a bit irregular and for them to have some side-effects like frequent urination and diarrhea, as a result.

Of course, you could also explore natural remedies to treat your dog's cushing's. Many conventional medications carry side-effects with them that natural treatments do not. A lot depends on your own beliefs and your dog's individual case. So, do some research on cushing's disease in dogs and, most importantly, keep communication with your dog's vet flowing freely.

Dog Training Problems: Diarrhea

One of the hindrances in housetraining a dog is due to his health conditions which cause him to lose his attention and eagerness to learn. Diarrhea is just one of these conditions that commonly attacks dogs. It is considered as symptoms instead as the disease itself, because there are still underlying causes of why diarrhea in dogs occur. Frequently, diarrhea subsides after few days. But if the case lasts for more than three days, you should be alarmed about your dog and immediately consult an animal doctor.

In order for you to understand more of the diarrhea that pesters your dog, the causes are enlisted below. We hope that this will help you to make some pereventive measures to save from him from the suffering this disease brings:

Bacterial: Infections include clostridium (not the same one that causes tetanus), E. coli, salmonella and Campylobacter. Affected dogs often experience diarrhea in increased amounts and frequency, with mucus or blood sometimes present in stools, states Keven P. Gulikers, D.V.M., Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, Animal Diagnostic Clinic in Dallas, Texas.

Viral: Viral infections including parvo and coronaviruses. "These two very serious infections often result in profuse, extremely watery diarrhea and relentless vomiting, both of which lead to severe dehydration, "Gulikers warns. "They can debilitate and kill dogs, especially younger puppies with inadequate vaccinations."

Cancer: "Diarrhea caused by cancer usually is associated with poor absorption of nutrients, leading to marked weight loss," Gulikers says. "Occasionally, vomiting may be linked with the diarrhea, and the stool can be dark black in color, indicating digested blood."

Inflammatory bowel disease: This immune disorder of the gastrointestinal tract can cause black diarrhea (suggestive of digested blood), with dog experiencing vomiting, weight loss and a poor appetite, Gulikers says.

Metabolic: liver dysfunction, kidney failure, and pancreatic inflammation

Parasites: "Contact with an infested area can occur very easily. Some parasites require a water source to survive," Gulikers explains. Another parasite is the Gardia which is responsible for Giardiasis in dogs. Gardia is a unicellular protozoa that lives in the intestines of humans and animals like dogs and other wildlife creatures.

Foreign objects: If a dog has swallowed materials not meant for his tummy, this will cause upset. It can be toxins like pesticide or something that comes from the garbage like plastic or wood. His system will eradicate that foreign object through induced defecating.

Unacceptable foods: One reason can be eating a human food where he dog's digestive system cannot tolerate. They usually get diarrhea when owners give them leftovers that contain more salt or fat.

Stress: Have you observed your new dog when he first stepped in your house? It is normal for him to feel stress when moving to a new environment. And it is common for a dog to catch diarrhea when he is stressed.

Medications: There are medicines for dogs in which the adverse effects include diarrhea. An example is the prednisone. When administering drugs to your pet, take note of label first to avoid matters become worse.
