Dog Dangers - 11 Toxins and Poisons You Need to Know About to Protect Your Dog

Keep in mind that some of these items may only produce minor problems like vomiting if they are eaten in small amounts, but others can cause severe symptoms. If your dog eats any of the things listed below you need to take instant action and get your dog to the veterinarian for treatment so you can prevent long term damage or death.

Here are a few items that are definitely dangerous for your dog if eaten. Even though some of these items look to you as "my dog would never eat that", you need to remember that dogs are curious and will eat anything if put in front of them.

Insecticides

1. Amitraz: Did you realize that this is an insecticide used on certain brands of tick collars and topical solutions for fleas and ticks? This is even more dangerous for puppies since they have not built up their immune systems yet. Usually the symptoms start within a few hours and your dog will become very weak and lethargic along with vomiting and diarrhea. If not treated, they could go into a coma or even die. Please check what goes into your flea and tick collars as well as liquids you put on their skin.

2. Permethrin: I feel it necessary to list this because it is also an insecticide used to kill fleas. If ingested by your dog his symptoms will include being lethargic, vomiting, seizures and muscle tremors. If you feel your dog has this poisoning you should bath him in lukewarm water. This will make him feel comfortable. DO NOT use a flea shampoo. It may contain permethrin in it and will just make things worse. Make sure you don't use hot water because that could also make it worse. (You should never use hot water on your dog anyway) After bathing, get your dog to the vet.

Medications

3. Aspirin: The reason this is toxic to dogs is because they can't metabolize it very quickly and can result in difficulty with blood clotting. Bleeding may occur and they can have respiratory problems as well as kidney failure.

4. Amphetamines: Medications are just plain dangerous to dogs. Humans may accidentally leave these out somewhere and your dog will snatch it up quickly. They can affect their brain as well as their nervous system. The symptoms will occur within 2 hours and include seizures, hyperactivity, tremors and restlessness.

Plants

5. Potpourri: Yes, we all love the smell of potpourri, but it can be very dangerous for Fido. Even if they just lick it, it can cause chemical burns to their tongue, esophagus and throat.

6. Burning Bush: If your dog ingests this plant they will vomit, have diarrhea, depression and a lack of appetite. If you feel it getting severe, call your veterinarian right away.

7. Chrysanthemum: If ingested, it will have the same results as the burning bush.

Spices and Baking Ingredients

8. Nutmeg: This is so toxic in high levels that it has been known to be fatal in some cases. Signs to look for are abnormalities of the nervous system, tremors and seizures.

9. Baking Powder and Baking Soda: As we all know both of these are leavening agents that make batter rise when baking. If your dog consumes a large amount of this they can have abnormalities in their electrolytes and create muscle spasms and heart failure.

10. Macadamia Nuts: Oh how we love these little nuts. Unfortunately if your dog eats as little as 6 of these nuts, it can cause severe toxicity. Signs to look for include vomiting, abdominal pain and stiffness, tremors, weakness and depression. Usually these symptoms will disappear within 24 hours, but if they still persist, call your vet.

Miscellaneous

11. Antifreeze: I felt I should include this in the list and you may laugh at this one, but there have been dogs that have had access to this and ate some. They come down with something called ethylene glycol toxicosis. It's very poisonous! Dogs that ingest this usually stop putting out urine and will get severe kidney failure. You must get them treatment within four to eight hours.

Please keep all these items out of reach where your dog cannot get to them. If you have plants, you made need to train your dog to stay clear from them. Check all labels when getting something to get rid of fleas and ticks. There are many good "natural" products you could use. Do
