Vomiting is the number one remedy to get rid of something you have eaten. It is the bodies first defense against disagreeable material, something that may cause the body harm.
A dog who is vomiting can be quite an upsetting sight. You virtually see how painful it must be for him to empty his stomach.
Whilst some vomiting can be quite harmless, it can also be a sign that your dog is very unwell indeed and you need to help him.
So here are a few helpful facts about vomiting in dogs:
If he has eaten something that will make him ill a dog will want to get rid of it be spewing it out again, i.e.by vomiting. If possible, a dog may eat some grass in order to help him get rid of the unwanted material in his stomach.
Especially young dogs pick up and swallow all sorts of things most of which should not be inside a dogs digestive system so bringing it back up is a very good idea.
If your dog tries to vomit unsuccessfully and his belly is getting bigger and harder he may be in serious trouble due to a stomach flip - do not waste time and rush him to the vet.
Sometimes a dog will bring up his food after a meal to re- eat it again. This is part of his ancestors behavioural set up where the members of the pack would take in as much as possible once the pack had managed to kill their prey. They would then go to a quiet place without any competition around, quietly bring it back up again and eat it a second time. If your dog does this it may be unpleasant for you but pleasant for him.
If you have a brood bitch she will most likely bring up her food for her offspring once they are three to four weeks old. This is the way a canine mother feeds her litter in the wild and nothing to worry about.
Some dogs vomit in the morning when their stomachs are empty. More often than not they bring up some yellow gall. If this is the case with your dog make sure you do not leave him without food for too long in the morning.
Then again, if he vomits yellow stuff on an empty stomach this may be a sign for some pancreatic disorder so your best bet would be to consult your veterinarian.
A dog may vomit if he drinks too much water fast. In doing this he brings the water back up.To remedy this behaviour stop him from drinking large amounts of water at a time, interrupt him and give him more water after a few minutes.
Vomiting may also be a sign that your dog has picked up some bugs. Those bugs may be more or less dangerous, so in order to be on the safe side, take him to your veterinarian.
Be aware of vomiting in conjunction with diarrhea. This is very dangerous for your dog and must be stopped as soon as possible. Do not waste much time since he will dehydrate quickly. Medical treatment needs to start without delay in order to avoid the worst.
Frequent and massive vomiting is always a sign that there in something really wrong inside your dog and medical diagnosis is necessary.
Remember: Your vet is the number one person to consult about your dogs health problems.
