Choosing The Right Dog Food For Sensitive Stomachs

Choosing the appropriate dog food for sensitive stomachs can be a long process, and will probably require a lot of research into trail and error. Firstly you need to determine what causes the sensitive stomachs you need to be sure to rule out any medical conditions so it might be worth taking your dog to the vest before changing their diet. Saying this, sensitive stomachs aren't uncommon in dogs you should consult your local vet if you have any questions concerning your dogs health.

Making sure it is just sensitivity and not any other medical issues is important as there could be potentially something more serious wrong with your companion. Pancreatitis is a disease that includes excessive vomiting and diarrhea, which can occur when your dog has eaten something that upsets their stomach. Allergies can too cause vomiting and diarrhea, so it's vital you rule out any medical issues. Simply switching what food you give your dog can eliminate the problem.

Commercial Dog Food Brands
Many popular dog food brands contain chemicals and ingredients that may be too harsh for a dog with a sensitive stomach, as they may contain a lot of sweeteners, food dyes and flavourings. They may also contain difficult to digest products such as corn, chicken by products, wheat bran and corn syrup. These products have very little nutritional value. Foods that are easily digestible are produce such as oatmeal, chicken rice and sweet potato.

Hypoallergenic Dog Food
Hypoallergenic dog food is great for sensitive stomachs as they contain natural ingredients, you should choose a well know brand of hypoallergenic dry dog food, preferably one that is available at your local Vets or one that has received good reviews form owners. Once you have chosen your food you should gradually wean your dog off the commercial brand, you can do this by gradually adding a small amount of the dry hypoallergenic foods to their usual source of food daily, by doing this there is no drastic change in the dog's diet. Drastic changes can be too harsh for your dog and could potentially make them poorly, so taking small steps is the key. After a week of so you should notice the change in your dog's behaviour and their disposition, sometimes dogs can be fed on a diet that doesn't match up to their lifestyle, there are great benefits of matching your dogs dietary requirements with their breed, activity level and age.

For any help and advice on changing your dog's diet don't hesitate to contact your local vet.
