How Can a Traveler Avoid Diarrhea?


"A wonderful journey can become a nightmare if certain precautions are not taken to avoid gastroenteritis."

Traveler's diarrhea is called to the occurrence of liquid stools in people who travel to other countries. Diarrhea may be accompanied by headache, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, fever and abdominal pain.

The disease is spread by drinking contaminated water or inadequate preparation of food.

Treatment to reduce the risk of developing traveler's diarrhea:

o Regarding the treatment of a person with diarrhea in the summer, the most important thing is to drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. It is advisable to do the small sips intake, but very often, to reduce the likelihood of vomiting.
o Do not use tap water for drinking or brushing teeth.
o Do not use ice made with tap water.
o If there is no alternative, boil water for five to ten minutes.
o Consume only pasteurized milk, and bottled liquid and sealed.
o Hot drinks like tea are usually safe.
o Avoid fruit juices at home, since tap water may contain
o Do not eat raw unpeeled fruits and avoid those that have been peeled by others.
o Do not eat raw vegetables or salads
o Do not eat raw meat or fish
o Avoid the seafood.
o Do not buy food from street vendors. Be careful with mayonnaise, with burgers, sausages and eggs. Some sauces and desserts with cream or eggs are an excellent breeding ground for germs.
o You must eat food hot (the heat kills the germs), and preferably freshly prepared (hot foods that are left to cool can contaminate again)
o Wash hands frequently
o In severe cases, oral re hydration solutions containing salts (mainly sodium, potassium and chloride) and small amounts of glucose, a good option is the sports drinks. Do seek medical help immediately if signs of severe dehydration, fever or bloody stools appear during traveling.
