Importance of Potassium and Its Supplements


Potassiumis one of those minerals that is not only found in abundance in the human body but is also very important for various functions and activities. It plays an important role in both intracellular as well as extra cellular functions. It plays an important role in muscle contractions and transmission of nerve impulses. Potassium supplements are one of those natural salts that are found in the cells of plants and animals. Therefore dietary intake is one of the best resources of potassium.

Functions of potassium supplements-

1. Maintains fluid balance of the body.
2. Helps nerve conduction
3. Helps produce energy by converting glucose into glycogen.
4. Synthesis of nucleic acids and protein.
5. Regulates heart beat and heart function.
6. Controls Blood pressure

a normal adult requires a potassium intake of up to 3000 to 3500 mg of per day. A child needs a potassium intake of up to 1100mg to 2000 mg while an infant requires about 700 to 800 mg of potassium supplements intake daily. The most commonly found an initial sign of deficiency of potassium is tiredness. The muscles and the body become weak. The electrolyte imbalance affects the nervous system and all other body functions. Some of the most prominent symptoms of potassium deficiency are-

1. Muscle weakness.
2. Palpitations and rhythmic disturbances of the heart.,
3. Water retention, edema
4. Confusion
5. Low blood pressure
6. Thirst
7. Affects kidney function.
8. Vomiting which further adds to potassium depletion.

There are a number of natural causes that can cause natural loss of potassium from the body. Sweating, is one of the most common and routine way of excretion of body potassium. Vomiting and diarrhea are two other causes where the vital fluids are lost excessively resulting in potassium ion depletion. Certain drugs and diuretic drugs also result in fluid loss from the body, causing potassium excretion. Tea and coffee is studied to have a lot of effect on the electrolyte balance of the body. Excessive intake of tea and coffee is learned to cause potassium decrease. There are conditions like kidney disorders where the natural excretion of potassium is affected. This leads to potassium toxicity, which is not very cardio-friendly.

Some of the normal dietary sources of potassium supplements are tuna, cod, salmon, sardines, chicken, peas, broccoli, tomatoes, potatoes, avocado, cauliflower, dried apricots, raisins, banana, lime beans, and green leafy vegetables like spinach, lettuce, parsley whole milk etc. Since most of the potassium requirements are fulfilled by normal food intake, the need for a potassium supplement is usually rare. But in certain cases where there are drug responses or in response to a health condition, loss of fluids is excessive, potassium supplement is advised. It is always advisable to take your supplements after seeking medical advice and proper blood test.

Some of the common side effects of phosphorus supplement intakes are nausea, vomiting, gastrointestinal disturbances, etc. People with kidney failure and heart diseases should not take potassium supplements without consulting their doctor.
