Diarrhea has several other effects to your dog. One of this is the loss of appetite. This could be serious as your dog will lose so much nourishment if it does not eat. To be able to help your pet you must know the reasons for dog not eating with diarrhea.
1. Stomach Problems
Diarrhea can put your dog's stomach to a "cease fire" condition on food. This could be due to the dog's body is trying to remove the cause of the diarrhea before returning back to its normal state. It is still possible to feed your pet in this condition but you have to change its diet. The result is the dog not eating with diarrhea.
2. Microbial Infection
Check your pet if it has a fever. If it does then the cause for its condition is an infection. Whether it is bacterial or from a virus the result will always be a loss of appetite in your dog. The cramping of the stomach will cause the dog not eating with diarrhea. Immediately stop feeding your pet and give it lots of water to help it fight and flush out the microbes causing its diarrhea.
3. Loss of Taste
Fever can affect the taste buds of your dogs. This mean that you can make your dog eat if you change the food you are feeding it. Mix your dog's food with potatoes or pumpkin to add a new flavor that could trigger your dog's taste buds. Sudden changes like turning to rice and bland cooked food could also stimulate your dog's taste buds making it eat again.
4. Stress
Diarrhea could be a stressful experience for your dog and stress can affect its appetite. The more stress it will have when diarrhea is accompanied with vomiting. Fever and weakness are contributing factors as well greatly taking its toll on your dog's energy. This will eventually result to your pet being too exhausted to eat.
Dog not eating with diarrhea is very common. All you need to remember is that the initial treatment is to let it fast while you increase its fluid intake. As it continues to defecate the stress in its digestive system will start to lessen and your pet will slowly gain its appetite back. Slowly encourage your pet to eat when this happens. Eventually it will return to its normal diet. However, if this does not happen, then it is time for your dog to see a veterinarian.
