Gluten Intolerance Symptoms - What You Need To Know Now To Recognize It

There are many different symptoms that are associated with gluten intolerance. You may have all of them and you may have only one of them. First of all, what is gluten? Gluten is a protein that is found in wheat, barley, rye and possibly oats. Gluten intolerance is when over time, the villi in the intestine become flattened due to your immune system being triggered to over react with strong and unusual antibodies which in turn wear down the villi. When the villi are flattened it is hard for them to do their job. Their job is to absorb the nutrients and minerals from the food that we consume.

That brings us to our first serious symptom- malnutrition or nutrient deficiency. You may be prescribed a vitamin and mineral supplement. Some of the gastrointestinal symptoms that have been reported are abdominal pain, abdominal distention, gas, bloating, indigestion or constipation. Remember that not everyone gets the same symptoms. Some people may get the fore-mentioned constipation when others get diarrhea, chronic or occasional. Some other gastrointestinal symptoms include decreased appetite, lactose intolerance, nausea, vomiting, stool that floats, stool that foul smells, bloody stool, or unexplained weight loss.

There are many non-intestinal symptoms as well. Some of those symptoms can be fairly serious. Anemia, bone and joint pain, bone disease, breathlessness, easy bruising, dental enamel defects or discoloration, depression fatigue, growth delay in children, hair loss, hypoglycemia, irritability or behavioral changes, mouth ulcers, muscle cramps, nose bleeds, seizures, unexplained short stature, skin disorders, and swelling are all symptoms of gluten intolerance. However, as I am sure you have noticed, those are all symptoms of other condition as well. This is why you will need to see your doctor to have the blood test to prove that it is definitely gluten intolerance or celiac disease as it is commonly called.
