Sure you've heard plenty of advise from just about anybody about what or what not to feed your dog. However how can you resist those soulful eyes seeming to say, "Can I have some?"
The most common food that we hear never to feed Fido are onions and chocolates but do you know what other kinds of food are not suitable for your dog and can you feed your dog the occasional treat from the table?
Not all food that you can eat can also be eaten by dogs because by nature their metabolic rates do not allow such. There are food that will cause your dog to have diarrhea, while some can cause severe illness or much worse cause the death of your precious Fido even in small amounts.
Knowledge of proper canine nutrition is an important thing that dog owners should learn so that Fido stays with you for as long as possible. So just what should you never feed your dog?
Avocadoes contain the chemical persin which is toxic to dogs. Give Fido a small amount of avocado and he will vomit and suffer from diarrhea.
As persin is found not just in the fruit but in the leaves, seeds, and bark as well it would do you good to keep Fido away from the avocado tree you happen to be growing in your backyard.
Sometimes dog owners give alcohol to their dogs to keep them from moving about or to stop them from barking. This causes intoxication to dogs as well as diarrhea, vomiting, difficulty in breathing, coma or death through alcohol poisoning.
If you think bones are okay think again. When dogs chew on bone and they splinter it's possible the splinter gets lodged in the dog's throat causing him to choke. If you must feed Fido a bone just give him beef shin bone nothing else.
A box of chocolates says "I love you" for dog owners but for dogs it's the contrary. They contain the chemical theobromine which causes excessive thirst, vomiting, diarrhea, even seizures, abnormal heartbeat, or worse death.
Chocolates also contain caffeine which in high doses is fatal to a dog's nervous system. It can also be found in coffee, tea, and soda.
Don't feed your dog cat food because it is fatty and rich in protein which while not directly fatal can cause pancreatitis.
Because dogs are lactose intolerant never give them dairy products such as milk and cheese.
Raw eggs cause skin and coat problems as well as reduces the absorption of the nutrient biotin.
There are certain fruits and fruit parts which are not to be given to your dog. These are: grapes, apples, apricots, persimmons, and plums.
Persimmons seeds cause inflammation of the small intestine; peach and plum pits cause obstruction moreover they contain cyanide.
Nuts and food that contain nuts as one of the main ingredients can make your dog nutty. Your dog will suffer from paralysis, vomiting, high body temperature, muscle tremors if he ate something with nuts.
All forms of onion - powdered, raw, cooked, dehydrated - and baby food causes anemia. Beware some baby foods contain small doses of onions.
And most of all, never feed your dog stale food because obviously they have molds, and all kinds of toxins that cause vomiting and diarrhea.
