Dark green poop usually implies that food is undigested. It has passed through the intestines without the process of becoming digested and changing color. In a situation when food moves from the bowels at a faster speed than usual, it is medically termed as fast or rapid transit. A common reason why green stool is caused is constipation which may result from excessive consumption of green leafy vegetables like spinach. Intake of iron supplements may also cause dark green bowel movements. Another reason could be excessive secretion of bile for which you should immediately see a medical practitioner.
Causes of Green Poop
There are several causes of green feces. They can be categorized as follows.
1. Use of medicines or laxatives.
2. Disagreement of a food item or food poisoning
3. Overeating of leafy green vegetables
4. Diarrhea
5. Cancer
6. Foods that contain chlorophyll
7. Excessive use of iron supplements
8. Algae
Often new born or breast feeding babies also show symptoms of green poop.
Symptoms
Some symptoms if associated with dark green poop that are a cause for worry are rise in body temperature, lack of motion, Diarrhea, pain in the rectum, loss of weight and general sickness. If any of the above is accompanied with your movement, you must immediately see a medical practitioner.
Treatment
Generally green feces is not a cause of worry. You could check this by decreasing the consumption of leafy vegetables. Don't have too many iron supplements or food rich in iron. You should avoid foods like colored cakes, sugar candies or foods that result in digestive disorders. Often dark green poop as such is not a cause of worry but if accompanied by other symptoms or if the condition persists you should see a doctor.
