Baby poop can be a great sign of how well the infant is doing and if he is being well fed or not. This is a great help for a lot of parents. This can also show if the baby is fine with the food you are feeding him or if he has any allergic symptoms. Hence, it is recommended for parents to always take notice of the feces of the baby - its appearance, how it smells, how frequency he poops, and the behaviour being showed by the baby along with other factors more.
The Appearance
The usual poop of the newborn baby is of black color and a bit slimy. It instantly turns dark green and yellow after the first week has passed. Its texture will then change from watery to something a bit loose. If the babies are properly fed for the first week then their poop will turn yellow immediately while if not, it will stay green and sticky. The babies who are breast fed are expected to have watery and loose feces while the babies who are formula fed should have pasty poop with a texture same as that of the toothpaste. Once baby food is fed to them, the poop's color is expected to change to orange or green, depending on the type of food.
The Smell
For the newborn babies, their poop does not smell much. However, the smell does change as he grows older since the average intestinal bacteria starts to grow. However, those formula fed babies come with some odorous poop. How much more when they start eating real food? Then it's time to start preparing the stool bags.
The Frequency
Newborn babies usually poop right after each feeding time. Nevertheless, this could not be compared with diarrhea. This is due to the reason that infants are under liquid diets. It is even normal for babies who are of eight months old to just give off poop only once a week. The formula-fed babies can give off poop every four days since the formula they get in do not easily break into becoming beneficial nutrients fast compared to breastmilk. Remember that the poop shall change in every aspect once baby food starts to get in the routine.
The Behavior
During these bowel movements, babies also display some behavioural patterns like the change in their facial expressions once their poop turns a bit solid or would turn red. Some even cry out or give a loud moan.
